What is Herding Cats?

Herding Cats is a board game where you get to live out the fantasy you all secretly have to work as an alien spacecraft to control the minds of cats and then beam them up to your ship.  You can work either cooperatively or competitively to achieve your goal.

What was that video?

You have just seen a test play of the beta version of Harding Cats. As my daughter (4), aunt (60), grandma (90)  and I (37) played.  That is an 86 year age gap between the youngest and oldest players!  As you can see we were able to successfully complete our goal as the cats scampered around the board before eventually being herded to the corners where they were beamed up to the alien ship. In this version we played cooperatively with the main deck.    The song is "Jenny's Theme" by Jason Shaw from the Free Music Archive.

Why Herding Cats?

I created this game to teach computer coding and computational thinking skills to kids in a physical way, and more importantly to make a game that is fun to play.  The idea with the game was to make approaching coding and computational thinking simple, intuitive, and exciting. Unlike other coding based board games which are either too complicated, too simple and boring, or not very interactive, Harding Cats works for all players from ages 4 to 100 and offers options to keep things exciting.

Herding cats is different, whether you play cooperatively or competitively the game pushes  you to consider and interact with other players throughout the game.  This allows for more interesting game play and in cooperative play allows for younger or more inexperienced players to ease into the concepts of the game through through following other players lead.

Who drew that amazing cartoon cats?

I have had the honor of working with local twin cities artist Molly Hansen to create the illustrations for the game, she has really killed it creating the look and feel of the game, and just for kickstarter donors, you have the chance to have Molly draw a personalized cartoon of your cat, or of your friends if you don't have one.  You must know a cat you would like to see cartoonized!

Risks and challenges

In order to make the main cats figurines at scale I will need to purchase a 3-D printer, print them out and paint them. While I have experience working with 3-D printers things can always go wrong and delays may happen. Choosing a September date for when the game will arrive to you should give me enough time to address any issues that arise in the printing process for both the figurines, cards, and board and deliver the game to you.
