About

The B.O.S (Beauty Of Science) Chemistry Bag is a girl’s chemistry kit that includes all the basic equipment needed for their cosmetic chemistry projects. These real laboratory tools are designed to give girls an exceptional chemistry experience. The B.O.S. Chemistry Bag is designed to empower girls to be the boss! Girls will enjoy scientific processes while making cosmetics and learning how to sell them. The B.O.S. Bag is designed to be mobile and encourages girls to take their chemistry experiments (cosmetics) wherever they go! Perfect for sleepovers, parties, or spending the weekend with grandparents!

The B.O.S. Chemistry Bag is an actual portable chemistry lab containing tools, commercial-grade products, an experiment guide and a science journal that can be aligned with academic standards. Using the B.O.S. Chemistry bag, girls will be able to make their own cosmetic products and learn how to market them.

The B.O.S. Chemistry Bag is currently being used in the Girls Pursuing Science STEAM (which stands for Science Technology Engineering Art & Math) enrichment program. Girls Pursuing Science (GPS, for short) started as a division of Kids In Technology, Inc. However, the program has been very successful and has grown beyond the “division” stage. Based on the need for STEAM programs for girls and the constant demand for our program, we decided to create a separate entity, brand our product line and refine our curriculum by making the B.O.S. Chemistry Bag available to girls everywhere, as well as other schools and enrichment programs who want to enable girls to grow and expand their intellect and options for the future.

ABOUT GPS

Girls Pursuing Science (GPS), introduces girls to science through cosmetic chemistry and teaches them to embrace entrepreneurship and financial literacy. GPS’s objective is to create an interest in STEAM-focused classes and careers on a number of different levels. GPS uses experiential learning to build upon a girl's natural ability to create, focus and think. Our goal is to channel a girl’s intuitiveness, compassion and love for humanity into innovations that can change the world.

Our Brief History

GPS launched its first pilot summer academy in June of 2014. The results were phenomenal! One hundred percent of the participants gave the program two thumbs up! At the end of the camp girls from GPS @Leland HS worked together and organized a fundraiser for their school that raised over $300! What’s more, we are proud to report that one girl started a small business using what she learned and continues to sell her cosmetics today.

September 2014 – May 2015: The first GPS School Based Clubs

GPS launched two school-based clubs, GPS-Elite @ Druid Hills Academy and GPS-Elite @ UNC-Center City. The GPS school-based clubs engage middle school girls in cosmetic chemistry the first semester and advance to computer science the next semester. The clubs are organized as competition teams and compete in STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) and STEAM (Science Technology, Engineering, Art & Math) Competitions. We are proud to report that despite the novice computer science skill set and the newness of the GPS program, Elite teams walked away as the big winners of the night! At the end of the 2014 GPS pilot program we proved our concept was valid, but we also learned a lot along the way. The most important thing we learned was to listen to the girls. The comment most often heard was the request for a Chemistry Kit girls could take home. The result:

Our first BOS Chemistry Kit – GPS Summer Academy 2015!

First B.O.S. Chemistry Bag
First B.O.S. Chemistry Bag

The kit was a success, but still more tweaks are needed…

  • A bag with secure closure
  • Too many bottles (added cost)
  • Include the Experiment Manual with the bag so girls can use it anywhere they take it
  • Include a teacher's manual for other instructors and organizations to use GPS in their enrichment programs
  • Make the BOS bag available to girls outside of the camp

Proposed Changes:

  • Design a bag with secure closure
  • Develop Experiment Manual to accompany the BOS Kit
  • Develop an Instructors manual
  • Include a Science Journal to record “Ah Ha” Moments!

We will revise the Experiment Manuel to align with academic standards and include the following sections:

  • Engage- Educate: Each experiment begins with the scientific background of a cosmetic product including density, states of matter, chemical reactions, acids and bases where applicable.
  • Design: This section introduces girls to the Engineering Design Process.

  • Inspire: Science comes alive! Girls make cosmetic products.
  • Reflect: The GPS Journal is an interactive journal that inspires girls to think about the process of science on their own. This is where girls record their data as well as their “Ah-ha” moments!

Why I Do care?

STEM, (Science Technology Engineering Math) is the latest buzz in education. STEM is based on the idea of educating students in these four disciplines in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Because these fields are deeply intertwined in the real world, STEM skills are essential for student success. However, research points to a decline in this type of education in America’s elementary and secondary schools.

National Math and Science Initiative
National Math and Science Initiative

When it comes to girls, the statistics on STEM or STEAM oriented careers show there are improvements to be made. For example, while women represent 48% of the workforce only 24% of them are working in STEM or STEAM jobs. Why is this so? Standardized testing still shows that males outperform females in the areas of science and math achievement; meaning the best jobs in these fields are usually offered to men. This in turn drives qualified women to seek careers in other fields. The gender-gap is getting narrower, but we’ve still got a way to go to make young women equally competitive in STEM/STEAM careers. GPS is ready to do its part in making sure this happens.

As a result, programs, toys, and kits for girls are popping up all over the place. The idea is to change a girl’s perception of science and math, bring awareness to the lack of women in science and math careers, and/or to defy stenotypes like pink vs. blue.

Although this is a good start, it is going to take more than a science kit to improve girls' perceptions of science and math and inevitably change the faces of STEM.

How is The B.O.S. Chemistry Kit Different?

The B.O.S. Chemistry kit is a chemistry kit, manual, and science journal that gets to the heart of most girls in order to introduce them to and involve them in STEM activities that focus on science and mathematics. The B.O.S. Kit put girls in charge by engaging those activities that require analytical thinking to solve problems and design products they use daily.  GPS place participants in the role of a cosmetic chemist by creating cosmetics and learning basic chemistry concepts.

As the founder of B.O.S., I am proud to say I have a small team with big hearts and innovative ideas. We are social entrepreneurs who have developed an innovative solution to one of society's most pressing social problems—the lack of diversity in STEM careers.

With your help, we can continue to empower girls and expand the same opportunities to girls around the world. With your help we will be able to:

  • Redevelop our curriculum to include accurate and educational scripts and protocols that meet national academic standards
  •  Add a teacher's manual to allow for expansion into other after-school enrichment programs that have a desire to offer STEAM education as an extra curricula activity
  • Give girls a different perception of science and math by designing a chemistry kit that is relevant to their lifestyle
  • Purchase items in bulk to make the bags cost-effective and put the B.O.S Kit in retail outlets
  • Hire a graphic artist/illustrator to design the science guides

Chinetra Williams is a GPS who started attending the Kids In Technology Summer Camps at age 8 and continued until she was too old to attend! Today Chinetra is our Senior Intern and coordinates the enrichment programs, manages inventory, Stuff B.O.S. Kits and is also one of the summer camp’s lead instructors.

Risks and challenges

We are confident in our ability to assemble the B.O.S Chemistry Bag in such a way that it will be of optimal benefit to every girl who has it in her possession. However, we do face the challenge of buying large quantities of the materials needed so that we can lower the cost of the kit.

In order to maintain our current price point we will continue to package the B.O.S. Bag in Jacquelyn’s garage.

In the event we need more kits for Kickstarter backers than we can reasonably supply ourselves, we have relationships with two local packaging companies that will allow for a smooth transition of a more mass production method.

The manuals are not complete. We have a Cosmetic Chemist, Science Teacher, and Curriculum Developer who are currently working on the content. We are in the process of recruiting a designer to create Kemi, GPS’s Research Chemist, as well as an illustrator to produce a professional quality manual. The recruiting process looks promising, with many talented artists to choose from. While we intend to take the necessary time to choose the best for this project, we are committed to having everyone in place by the end of the Kickstarter campaign.

Possible delays in printing and production of the manuals is also something we have to think about and be prepared to deal with. However, we expect a smooth process since we are so personally invested in the project and have good working relationships with several publishers.
