ABOUT US Cherry Pit collective is communal studio space for artists, makers, and creatives in the heart of Kansas City, Missouri. We will be moving into 604 E 31 ST in August 2016. We are a varied group of artists and makers and the studio will be home to a papermaker, painters, jewelers, illustrators, and small business owners all working as entrepreneurs or freelancers.
Like many makers and artists, we are looking for space and community. Members of the Cherry Pit Collective are currently making work out of their own homes, which means working in bedrooms on small desks, in ill equipped basement spaces, or on dining room tables, constantly pushing projects aside. We coordinate families, children, day jobs, side businesses and housework. Instead of meeting in professional spaces to discuss collaborations and projects with clients, we’re meeting in loud and crowded coffee shops or putting ourselves in potentially dangerous situations by inviting clients into our homes.
The Cherry Pit Collective will provide a dedicated space for our members to create, meet and make! We will leave our houses and apartments, and arrive at the Cherry Pit, ready to work, with full focus, plenty of space, light and community. We will no longer be isolated or feel lonely in our homes - we will have a safe environment for the development and growth of our female-fronted businesses.
Our building owners have been rehabbing the space for the last year, and they are ready to install the final details to finish the space. As artists we will need adequate lighting so we can work throughout the day and night, heating and cooling so we can use the space throughout the year, and of course, plenty of electrical outlets for the various tools required to create.
By paying for these expenses upfront, with funds from our friends, family, and colleagues, we can keep the space more affordable for Cherry Pit members. In addition to our crowdfunding efforts, we will be supplementing funds with annual fundraising events, class fees, and monthly fees from members.
CLASSES & EVENTS If you are an artist or craftsperson in Kansas City, you can benefit from the minds at Cherry Pit Collective. Starting in September, we will host weekly workshops and classes on the topics that you need to succeed as a small arts business - these events will cover everything from setting up a booth at a craft fair, to filing your taxes, to fine tuning your SEO for your online shop, and how to get your products into local shops. Look for events like “Maker Church” a group discussion where artists and creatives can commiserate about life and business, “#girlboss night,” a networking event, and “Creative Cookie People & Maker Magic” a series of presentations by local experts on specific topics, each followed by group discussion and questions. Classes are open to the public, and many will be donation based.
Kansas City residents can join us for quarterly open studio events. The doors will be open to the public, and members will have new works on display and items for purchase. Other artists, collectors, and nearby residents can come and enjoy a beverage, while looking at, and discussing the artwork on display. Cherry Pit Collective will bring creative and vibrant energy to the nearby neighborhoods! We hope to contribute to making the area around 31st and Cherry a new destination for the arts in Kansas City.
REWARDS We’ve lined up lots of great rewards for our backers - printed shirts, tote bags, and handmade gift collections, which will include lots of goodies from our members, and will be perfect for holiday gifts.
MAKER VILLAGE The building next to ours will house the Maker Village, a community maker space for woodworking, metalworking, and electronics. Our building owners and co-founders of Maker Village, Sam Green and Nick Ward-Bopp have been rehabbing the space for the last four years. The entire building has been tuck-pointed, inside and out, a new roof has been installed, complete with solar panels, and all of the plumbing and electrical systems have been updated. Maker Village has a projected opening date of January 2017, and will be an excellent partner and complement to the Cherry Pit Collective.
