You know those moments? Like back in college staying up late into the night and talking with friends? Or those nights sitting on a roof, star-gazing and talking about life?
You can make more of these moments. Research shows that it comes down to the quality and order of the questions that you ask and your willingness to listen.
What is CONNECT?
CONNECT is a beautiful deck of questions proven to spark better conversations.
We are creating a hand-drawn deck of large-format question cards that will make it easy to engage with thoughtful questions and bring them out in family settings, with new friends and old friends, at events, workshops, and on team retreats.
CONNECT is deceptively simple.
The deck is divided into three levels of increasingly personal question (all of them safe for work). The deck is most effective in pairs, and can be used with up to 4 people per deck.
You work your way through a few of the Level 1 questions, everyone taking 3 minutes to answer each question, until you are all ready to move on to Level 2.
Then you work your way through Level 2 questions, until everyone is ready to move on. And then you repeat the process with the Level 3 questions.
That’s it. After 45 minutes answering these questions, you will know each other better than you know some of your best friends.
Don’t take our word for it. Try it out for yourself, either by backing our project or working with the original set of 36 questions from Dr. Aaron’s research.
ABOUT THE RESEARCH
More than 20 years ago, researchers succeeded in making strangers fall in love in a lab. That now-famous study, “The Experimental Generation of Interpersonal Closeness,” has been replicated and cited hundreds of times, and the premise is simple.
Two people sit together and ask each other a series of increasingly personal questions, which are designed to help them open up to each other slowly and authentically.
The research went viral a few months ago when the New York Times published an article titled, “To Fall in Love with Anyone, Do This.”
But this process is not just about falling in love. It’s also fantastic for building connection and friendship.
Scott Sherman of the Transformative Action Institute brought this exercise to StartingBloc, and for years he has been using it to help our Fellows, and other audiences around the world, connect more deeply.
After seeing the power of this process, our intention is to share it with the world, and to do it in a format that is easy to use with your friends, family, and even professional colleagues.
CONNECT and the 36 QUESTIONS RESEARCH
With the StartingBloc community, we have brainstormed ALL NEW questions for CONNECT. We are testing the new questions at our StartingBloc events with people from around the country, keeping only the good ones, and diving them into three levels.
We are also seeking permission from the copyright holders behind the study to include some of the original questions (because they are great). Stay tuned for updates!
We tested the exercise hundreds of times with participants at our events and with the social change leaders who make up our Fellows.
Our designer worked through several different designs and card sizes to created a basic design with 12 questions and we held a day-long event to try them out. Each of our participants came out feeling inspired and left us with great feedback to make the cards even better.
We plan to get one more big round of feedback (hopefully from you!) before finalizing the design. At the close of the Kickstarter project, we will quickly take these cards to production. Creating these cards from a sustainable and US-based production source is very important to us, and we will do everything we can to make sure to minimize our footprint when manufacturing our deck!
THE MUCH-COVETED HOODIE
We move leaders of change from high-potential to high-impact.
We are a small team working tenaciously to grow and support the community of leaders who are building a world that works for everyone.
We do this through the StartingBloc Fellowship, where we rigorously select and train high-potential leaders of change at our 5-day Institutes.
While there, these entrepreneurs, activists, educators, and other social innovators learn from proven change-makers, commit to take bigger risks, and find a community of life-long allies.
At StartingBloc, relationships come first, and we deeply value honest conversations, taking ownership, dreaming big, and striking a healthy balance between work and play. Our team is based in Boulder, CO.

You will find as you look back upon your life that the moments when you have truly lived are the moments when you have done things in the spirit of love. -- Henry Drummond
