About this project
Hi, my name is Margaryta Kuzmin and I’m a bilingual speech language pathologist as well as a mom of two. I created this book with the help of my wonderful team at Bright Tales as a tool for early language development, but it has grown into something more than just that.
Baby Zoo is a very special book for kids of various ages and development stages, from “just-starting to speak” toddlers to avid readers. The book is packed with a lot of educational concepts. The engaging rhymed story will keep your kids interested and motivated during the reading. Your child will learn the name of each animal, colors, numbers, shapes, emotions and other important concepts. As a speech therapist I find this book extremely useful in my therapy sessions. It’s relatively small and compact but full of ideas to target receptive, expressive and pragmatic language goals. You may find it useful to check out my suggestions on how to fully utilize the Baby Zoo book, included at the end of each copy. This book is perfectly sized to carry around, the illustrations are bright and colorful, the pages are thick so the little fingers can turn them during the reading and its made out of durable material to withstand a busy toddler on the go.
The book is completely done! As seen in our campaign video, we have even printed out a “proof of concept” physical copy and so far our test audience loves it! We are starting this project on Kickstarter because we need your help to secure the funds to get this book printed professionally. We are also working on a companion coloring-activity book for this project. It will promote the developing of your child’s cognitive and motor skills by focusing on applying colors, connecting dots, size matching, logic and more. The activity book will have all of the familiar characters from Baby Zoo story and will come with a sheet of stickers! You can also get many additional perks that are exclusive to this Kickstarter campaign. Things like: signed copies, puzzles and a themed tote bag to carry all of that around. We are even offering an option to have a custom illustration drawn with your child and the characters from the book!
The book has 32 pages + cover and measures 6x6 inches. Every page has a beautiful illustration done by Cleoward Sy. We have done our best to make each animal look appealing to children so that they can relate to emotions in the story and thus keep their interest throughout the book. The Baby Zoo story is about an accident that takes place inside a zoo where each animal gets covered in paint. Of course everything gets resolved and things are back to normal by the end of the story, but throughout this tale your child will have plenty of opportunity to exercise with word pronunciation, color definition, memory, emotion recognition, counting, rhyme repetition and even shape recognition.
The book will be printed using offset printing with real ink (not toner), which means it will be of the highest quality possible. It will also have thick 40pt laminated glossy board pages that are extremely durable and easy for young kids to flip.
We are currently working on finishing up the coloring & activity book. But what we can tell you right now is that this 8.5 by 11 (letter sized) book will include 40 pages full of coloring, connect-the dots, shape definition and lots of other fun exercises for your kids. It will feature a soft cover and will be done with offset printing as well to guarantee the best quality. This activity book also comes with a sheet of stickers with the characters from the story. Since the activity book is still in the development we will gladly listen to any requests you as a contributor may have.
Besides the Board Book and the Coloring/Activity book with stickers we will also have rewards such as a 12piece 8x10inch puzzle as well as a branded eco-friendly 6oz cotton-canvas Tote Bag to carry all of your rewards around. You can also get a Custom Drawing of yourself or your child with the characters from the book and we'll mail it to you as a 8x10 inch poster. And as a top reward I offer to do a reading of this book with all kinds of activities at your group, daycare, library or school. The price includes travel of up to 100 miles from Brooklyn, anything farther than that will need to be negotiated as additional cost. Below is a breakdown of all of the available reward sets.
We, as a team, have invested a lot of time and personal funds into this passionate project of ours. We do not include any of that into the budget we need to secure with this Kickstarter campaign. We personally cover the illustration, design, editing, testing and proofreading costs. We just want to make this book as affordable as possible to everyone and printed at the highest quality and hence need enough backers to have an initial printing run done by a professional printing company. Therefore most of the funds we are asking for will be used for printing. The rest will go into the distribution costs and fees to Kickstarter and the credit card companies.
The reason our delivery is scheduled for December of this year has to do with several factors. Because of the nature of a board books, they typically take longer to produce. This book will also be printed in China and the shipment to USA will take a while to arrive. We were estimated 9 weeks delivery from the time the final print files are approved. Since this campaign will take about a month we are adding all of this time and also leaving a cushion for unexpected delays. But we are confident you’ll have all the rewards on December 2016.
We have also decided to only ship within USA and the shipping is already included in our pricing. We have done some research and unfortunately it looks like the shipment for the book is often 3 or more times the actual price of the book. We want you to get the best value for your money and we don’t think paying this much for shipping is a good idea, even though this book is awesome :) We would really love for people all over the world to enjoy Baby Zoo so if you are not located in the US we would encourage you to get the digital version of this book. However, if you really want to get the physical book and the extra rewards please contact us and we’ll see if we can make it work.
Risks and challenges
Since the design of the book is completely done it eliminates any potential delays on the finalizing stage. The sticker sheet and puzzle are done as well, so that should not be a problem. The activity book on the other hand is still in the design and editing stage, and as it’s the only unfinished part of the project there is a small chance it might cause a delay. But so far we are on track with all tasks and knowing that regular style books can get printed much quicker, we are confident all deliveries will arrive as scheduled.
We believe that the biggest difficulty with this project would be the distribution and fulfilment of the product and rewards. Board book have a more extensive printing and assembly process and thus require more time to produce. The books will be printed in China and shipped over to us in the U.S. We have been given an estimated 9 weeks printing and shipping time by the printing company. Since this campaign is scheduled to complete in early September, we will be placing a print order around that time as well. We are confident that even if we encounter any unforeseen delays with shipping and customs, you will still receive the Baby Zoo book with rewards by mid-December. In fact, you may receive the book much sooner than that, but it’s not in our habit to promise something we can’t deliver on, so mid-December it is.
Even though this is our first book project we have extensive experience with design and printing so we are confident we can get an excellent product your child will enjoy in a timely manner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
