About this project
I'm excited to be here with my second project!
With your help the curbside retro mid-century modern mailbox inspired by those produced during the 50s and 60s is a reality! It's time to take the next step. I've received hundreds of emails requesting a wall mounted "modbox." So, here it is!
I took the horizontal lines and colors of the curbside modbox and incorporated those into a sleek and elegant wall mounted design. The dimensions are reminiscent of mailboxes produced in the 50s and 60s when the ranch-style house, with a long low profile, was extremely popular with the booming post-war middle class.
Using my conceptual sketch and dimensions, Andy of Vector Product Development used SolidWorks 3D CAD Design Software to build the base design model/drawings. Using GoToMeeting, we made real-time design changes with the ability to look at any view or cross section. We also had design meetings with the fabricator, Hi-Tech Fabrication, Inc., to ensure the wall mounted modbox could be fabricated at the lowest cost possible.
A unique design/engineering aspect is the Housing (outer shell) that fully wraps the Letter Box (door). A pivot point pin and stop pin, along with the side cut-out, allows for the easy removal of the door form the shell.
There is also an optional letter tray that can be attached to the Housing. As shown above, the letter tray projects down 2" from the housing, but based on the prototype, we lengthened the letter tray so that it has a 2" opening.
The Housing (shell) and Letter Box (door) will be powder coated prior to finally assembly, so any two-tone color combination can be made easily! Colors include the original five curbside Eichler Exterior Accent Colors (Turquoise, Sunflower, Pumpkin, Eucalyptus, and Paprika), white, and black.
We are also introducing the new "Lime Green" plus an Anodized Aluminum Effect (used on Limited Edition curbside). We'll have three colors in a satin finish too! These include bone white, aged copper (light green), and light blue. So many choices!
Crafted in America using 20 gauge cold rolled galvannealed steel that is 75% thicker than most mailboxes today.
We'll powder coat the mailbox inside and out, baking at 400 degrees. This method is more environmentally friendly than using baked enamel.
Anodized aluminum will be used for the handle (8 gauge). Looks great with the color options!
The modbox measures 15" long x 6" high x 4.5" deep.
The perfect compliment to modbox. These mid-century modern mailbox numbers were inspired from Richard Neutra's work, where he specified lettering that was open and unobtrusive, the same aesthetic that typified his architecture.
Font shop, House Industries consulted with Neutra's son Dion and studied the archives of acclaimed photographer Julius Shulman to bring the same linear geometry to Neutraface without sacrificing a warm and human feel.
We have twelve working prototypes that we continue to test. The fabricator that has produced our curbside mailbox since September 2014 will produce the wall mounted version. They are located less than 15 miles away, which has been helpful in resolving manufacturing issues quickly and insuring our high standards for quality are met.
As soon as the campaign reaches the funding goal, I will sign a purchase order. If the goal is met quickly, and considering the fabricator's typical production time estimates, finished units could start coming off the line by mid December. In part, this depends on their production queue and volume at the time the order is placed.

Risks and challenges
Based on my experience having the curbside modbox manufactured during the past 15 months I'm confident in my ability to deliver a quality product on time. I've built a strong relationship with the metal fabricator, who has been in business for over thirty years.
There are always issues that can arise, but the risk has been managed by obtaining quotes from the 3D CAD models and having twelve prototype units fabricated.
Based on my experience with the past five curbside modbox production runs, I'm sure that problems will come up, but I'm confident solutions can be found. I've found the fabricator to be highly pro-active in identifying and communicating issues and working towards solutions quickly. However, from experience, this may take additional time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
