What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About

A few years ago, I designed and successfully patented VisorTwin, a car accessory designed to offer simultaneous front and side protection from sun glare.

I launched a Kickstarter project to introduce the product to the market (the video used in this current campaign is from the old project). However, I was bothered by the current version's functional and aesthetic flaws. I shelved the project for a while until I found an outstanding mechanical engineer and product designer (shout out to Nikola) who helped with the re-design process.

Now, after a few years, I am once again launching another Kickstarter project to fund VisorTwin's re-design and subsequent introduction to the market place. The money collected will be used to fund another mold, which is the basic template used for manufacturing. The funds will also cover the minimum order required by the manufacturer. All told, I will need approximately $4500 to commence manufacturing and shipment of the first batch of commercially-viable VisorTwin units.

The first flaw that needs to be addressed is the clip, as explained below:

The second flaw is more aesthetic in nature but needs to be addressed nonetheless:

Risks and challenges

The first iteration of VisorTwin proved to be a viable product except for some design flaws that can easily be corrected in the next version. If there are any risks and challenges, they will most likely involve delays in shipment. Currently, the manufacturer has quoted a lead time of 30-40 days from the time they start creating the new mold to the time the first batch of samples are shipped to me. With full production, shipment to the United States, then shipping to Kickstarter backers, the entire process is closer to 90-100 days. Any unforeseen delays in manufacturing, shipment, and/or Customs issues could naturally push delivery times beyond 100 days from the time this Kickstarter campaign has ended, assuming the campaign is successful.
