ABOUT THE ETK OPTIKS COLLECTION
Ethnotek is a social enterprise that collaborates with artisans around the globe to combine their traditional handmade textiles with functional travel bags and we are beyond stoked to launch our 2nd Kickstarter campaign, the ETK OPTIKS collection! This colorful and tricked-out line includes the Raja Full Photo Backpack for the nomadic photographers with lots of gear, the Desa Sling Pouch for photo enthusiasts with minimal gear and the Kota Camera Strap for all photographers.
The Raja Photo Backpack
The Raja Photo Pack 30-liter is purpose-built for the daily commute, a weekend camping trip, and even the occasional cross-continental journey of self-discovery.
While the Raja pack is made to last a lifetime, we know that people's moods and interests can change. This is why the bag has interchangeable front panels called 'Threads'... Threads allow you to continually express who you are without changing the bag itself AND support multiple artisans at the same time.
Securely hidden behind the Thread is a zip compartment that opens up to the main camera gear storage area. The customizable padded inserts allow you to configure the gear storage compartment to an arrangement that best fits your specific gear.
The main compartment can accommodate two camera bodies, a drone, multiple lenses, batteries, a microphone, cables, memory cards, camera straps and more. The right side of the bag zips open for quick access to this camera compartment for capturing quick shots while on the move.

The Desa Sling Pouch
The Desa Camera Sling Pouch is scaled to fit most DSLR and mirrorless camera bodies, with a little extra room on either side of its internal padded camera dividers for an additional lens, microphone, battery charger or strap.
The internal vinyl-mesh zip pocket secures and protects batteries, memory cards and lens cloths. The exterior of the bag has two slip pockets for lens caps, a phone or sunglasses and a padded top handle for easily moving the bag around. The shoulder strap can be completely removed and stored in the back panel slip pocket when converting the bag into a pouch to slide into your favorite bag or backpack.
The Raja waist belt can pass through the back panel of the Desa, converting it into a waist bag, great for when you don’t want any weight on your shoulders.
2 New Products Added By Backer Request!
We've received some amazing feedback from our tribe of backers and the majority has requested that we add a 2nd larger Desa Sling and a removable Packing Cube that can accommodate camera gear and many other tech & travel gear... SO, we created them, boom! See the details below and click the green button below to add them to your pledge!
The Kota Camera Strap
Kota has a cozy neoprene underside and outer edges for comfort while carrying, has an artisan fabric topside, and is adjustable. On the underside of the shoulder pad is a hidden stretch-mesh memory card pocket, which is handy when you need to quickly change cards while shooting. The Kota strap is removable and can be used on multiple camera bodies thanks to the detachable anchor-point system. The super-durable Hypalon anchor points attach to camera bodies in a non-bulky way and the quickly connects by high-quality and discrete anodized aluminum snap hooks.

Ethnotek's mission is to keep culture alive by creating high quality laptop and travel bags that feature ethically sourced handmade textiles. Backing our project sustains employment for the art of hand printing, weaving and embroidery with our partnering artisan villages in Ghana, Guatemala, India, Indonesia and Vietnam. Ethnotek is so much more than just a bag, it's a celebration of culture, it's a community, it's a global movement! Come join the Tribe, together we can keep culture alive!
All artisan relationships were established by Ethnotek's Founder Jake and we've developed close working relationships over the years. Our artisan partners span across eleven villages and we are honored that they equally value our partnership in combining their traditional handmade textiles into accessible and functional products such as travel bags.
Our artisans are true masters of their craft and so much more! They are parents, community leaders, and entrepreneurs. Many of them are educated and have returned to their villages to continue their family weaving businesses.
They are business and tech-savvy and are not looking for hand-outs, they're looking for business! They are looking to connect to a wider global audience in which to sell the products they make to preserve their own culture and craft. Ethnotek was built to support community leaders like this and to help bring that global audience to them!
Ethnotek has commissioned 200 artisans in 5 countries for 36,000 meters of their handmade fabric, which equates to 4 Mount Everest stacked vertically, Boom! We’re extremely grateful to our tribe of customers that made this statistic possible. Now, let's grow this statistic even more together through this Kickstarter campaign. Lets make it fly!
Meet the team!
Ethnotek has been rocking steady in business for 7-years and has a stronger foundation in design, production, fulfillment and customer service than ever before!
Ethnotek is run by husband and wife duo, Jake & Cori Orak, and they are the ones responding to all of your inquiries throughout this awesome Kickstarter campaign! The two have lived in Vietnam for 8 years, 5 of which, were spent launching and nurturing the Ethnotek brand with their friend Ai (owner of Ethnotek's workshop in Saigon). Jake and Cori are originally from Minnesota, USA, but definitely, consider Vietnam their 2nd home. They now live and work in Bali, Indonesia, with trips back to visit the VN crew every 2-4 months.
Our sewing workers are paid a wage that is 81% higher than the minimum for sewing workers in Vietnam. Each worker is provided with two weeks paid holiday time off, maternity leave, health insurance, unemployment benefits, social security and travel & food stipend. With all benefits included, our workers are paid 142% more than minimum wage for sector 1 industry standard (according to the VN Ministry of Labor). The average age of our crew is 24 and it's roughly 70% women and 30% men.
All of our fabric suppliers have Blue Sign Certification and are REACH compliant.
Our plastic buckles, hardware, zippers, and webbing also comply with REACH standards. Phthalate compounds are the biggest concern for REACH. This compound mostly exists in plastic hardware and PVC backed fabrics, which we don’t use.
Our print supplier for packaging and hangtags produces for some of the most well-known brands in the world and meet A-01 classification, the highest standard possible for toxicity compliance.
Risks and challenges
We've been designing, producing and shipping bags for seven years already, however, unexpected challenges may come up from time to time! So we'd like to give you a heads-up on a few things!
Lead Times/Supply Chain: The artisan fabrics are, in fact, authentically made by hand on a loom, block-print or by needle-point. Because of this, these stunning works of art have a life before we even begin production. That is why our estimated delivery time is in July. Don't worry, though, we'll keep you informed every step of the way so you know exactly where your reward is in the timeline, from the campaign - to artisan - to your doorstep!
Uniqueness/Variations: A majority of our artisans make their textiles in large sheets, we then cut multiple smaller panels out of these large sheets for each individual bag. This results in each individual bag being entirely unique, looking slightly different than the photos provided. The difference is usually very subtle, and most people don't even notice!
For instance: With the Guatemala 1 style... The red and yellow stripes are slightly higher or lower on each bag than what's shown in the images above, making each bag one of a kind. Everything else is identical. Our Vietnam textiles, however, come from up-cycled Hmong skirts, where each woman has hand embroidered her own design and colorway into each bag. This results in slightly different colors (more red, or more orange) and slightly different patterns.
We see these as "signatures of handmade", which are to be celebrated! You can learn more about it with a short video and explanation here: http://bit.ly/Textile_Variations
Taxes, Duties & Shipping: Ethnotek is absorbing some of the shipping charges on each reward we ship, however, due to the complex and sometimes unknown nature of international taxation, backers will be responsible for covering any VAT, import duties, etc, in their country of residence/delivery.
