Chrysalis is the much-awaited culmination of a 3-year long collaboration between the founding members of Soul Lab Dance Project. Building on the experimental work we have been generating in our creative laboratory, Chrysalis is Soul Lab's first-ever evening-length work and the momentous "coming out" of the collective.
A chrysalis is the stage of development when a butterfly is seemingly inactive in a cocoon. A deceiving image, a chrysalis is an internal process of massive transformation. Using this as a metaphor for female awakening, the ferocious all-female cast of Soul Lab Dance Project blends contemporary and urban dances with spoken word and live song, proving they just might be on the brink of something great.
Soul Lab Dance Project is an all female dance collective founded in 2010 by graduates of the UCLA Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance. The women of Soul Lab seamlessly weave Contemporary, House, West African and Afro-Brazilian dances together to create work that is visually stunning and viscerally evocative. They claim space with their voices and bodies, and invite people into their creative process, community events and performances to do the same. Their signature eclectic and experimental work has been shown throughout festivals and venues in Los Angeles, including Club Nokia, Highways Performance Space, Live Arts LA, REDCAT Theater's Studio, So-Cal Dance Invitational, and the Fowler Museum at UCLA.
Soul Lab is currently in an exciting development and rehearsal process. We meet as a collective several times each week to create and move together, as well as to discuss production tasks. In order to present Chrysalis, we are tapping into our vast network of fellow artists and strong community of supporters. We feel driven and confident that we will be able to bring the vision of this project to life, but we need your help!
In order to present Chrysalis, we need to raise a total of $5,000. This money will be allocated for:
rehearsal space rental
costumes and props

Risks and challenges
The financial risk of not raising enough funds to cover our costs is our biggest challenge in this project. An emerging dance collective, Soul Lab's funds are extremely limited and at the present moment not capable of covering all costs.
In addition to this risk, in the fall, two of Soul Lab's founding members, Sophia and Kristin, will be heading to graduate school. This upcoming event marks a dramatic shift in the collective's history, and we don't know when the next time the five founding members will be able to collaborate again. For this reason, we want to take advantage of this limited time we have together and, with your support, create the strongest show we possibly can!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
