Our new logo

We're not saying yet that this is the FINAL logo, but this is our current Air Force approved logo.

Logos and names of games (and otherwise) are always controversial - they are almost never universally loved.

For what it's worth, we did put a lot of thought into the design of this logo - it is closer to our original logo, but not with the "old school" treatment.  It is also more representative of a "one world" United Star Force, as the organization is supposed to be, not just a United States entity with United States fighters.

Here is the breakdown of the different parts of the logo and what they represent:

At the center of the bottom circle is another circle - this represents a United Earth;

The four parts of the split bottom circle: army, air force, navy, marines;

The negative symbol in the bottom circle is of a star fighter;

The wings represent the United Star Force's reach from Earth's orbit to the outer planets of the star system, and beyond;

The negative planet formed by the curvature of the wings represents fallen soldiers, who gave their lives in defense of peace, human rights, and United Earth values;

Finally, the star represents our sun, as well as the hope for peace.

We know this art will be met with some smiles and some frowns, but it is our sincere hope that you all will grow to love this logo as we do.

Kindest Regards,

Garry, Melissa and the Escape Hatch team

      I think I liked the logo more before...this doesn't look much like space travel. It looks more like some corporate logo or something...maybe get some inspiration from the various shapes (and logos) of Russian and American space shuttles and create something inspired by that.

      You say that like it's a bad thing!

      Oh, and hurrah for Austin. I could drop off some homebrews sometime.

      I like the new logo...not as much as the original, but given the circumstances, it's still pretty bad ass! You are based in Austin, Texas so it's kind of fitting that it looks like Longhorns as well. :)

    6. BobbyDylan on May 17, 2012

      Yeah, It's nice. Although I think of better logo's, I don't think it's that important. Overall, I'm keen to see more fighter and cap-ship concepts than logo options.

    7. Wayne Sung on May 17, 2012

      Definitely thanks for letting us into the workroom. :) Also a LOL and partial agreement at Victor Fernandez "pink pony" comment. Don't worry too much about the logo. Your game will end up being the justification. :)

      Ok then, logo done. Now the good stuff. I can't wait for what lies ahead. Thanks again for letting us be a part of this creation.

      Looking at FB, this page and the comments section, the best I can tell its that the "likes/loves/indifferents/get back to work and make the stink in' game already's" outnumber the "back to the drawing boards by a ratio of 10+ : 1 - i would just like to reiterate that I have never seen consensus on a logo or title - for whatever reason, someone always has a negative reaction - like all art, there are the rules that you are taught in school and the rules that you break to make something different and eye-catching. Will this logo look bad ass on the side of a capital ship as you fly by it? You bet!

      We are still tweaking lighting, lens flare, finishes and bevel and other tweakable attributes, but for now, the logo is the logo and we are moving onto bigger fish, like establishing forums, creating a final art list, and putting the finishing touches on the story elements of the game. In addition, we're putting together a new prototype that plays on PC and Vita...lots to do...

      Take the lens flare off the bottom of the image. It drags attention downwards and is just downright unsightly.

      As with the crowd, I like the logo and yet also have reservations. Mine echo a previous poster's, the wings have a first impression of horns before it settles as wings. I'd blame the lines running from top/bottom for encouraging the idea that the points of the wings are separate from the main body.

    13. Nathan on May 16, 2012

      Oliver is right on the money. Please consider that advice. I don't work in graphic design for a living, but I do have a degree in it, and the balance/complexity of this logo is way off.

      I certainly preferred the old logo, and agree with some that say a more "martial" and less curved wing design looks nicer- though I image that was part of the issue with the old logo.

      That being said, it's really the gameplay I'm looking forward to more than anything.

      Dirk Heinz on May 16, 2012 much time do you need to spend justifying a logo.

      Don't like it, but hell, I didn't pledge for a logo!
      If the game is ok I'll don't bother if you use that or a pink pony as a logo.

      One of the eyecatchers of this kickstarter was the logo, so I give a positve vote on this one.

      Whether it could be better, I guess you can try out some things.

      Ultimately I like the light in the title and didn't think too much about it, but if the light detracts from the title too much then make it smaller, keep the glow, and use the flash for the opening title sequence.

      The star to me is just right, the sun was never meant to be too near to Earth anyway. :) it also gives me a feeling we're reaching for something, moving towards a goal.

      The too many shapes isn't so accurate a comment as it is too many lines. Many of the shapes you mentioned are in negative space which to me doesn't count as much. The lines however do cut up the symbol a bit. If you want to represent solidarity then you may want to soften or take out the many lines in the wings there, especially the tapering bits at the tips (or the upper rim/ring). A nice solid tip may be a stronger image than a lined and fractured one. And from your description, the lines don't seem to symbolize anything so taking them out would also simplify.

      The bevel and sheen look great, a real metallic look. (Do an animation of the sheen in the opening sequence!) It looks good in title or opening but you may also want to try the insignia out on uniforms as a test as well. See how good it looks solid-colored on a shirt. Because unless everybody wears pins/badges only, that insignia is going to be placed on all manners of objects and clothing.

      I like it! I can see a believable evolution from the current USAF logo to that one. Very cool! In my head, I imagine a future Space Force adopting the "retro stylings of the early 21st Century USAF logo" :D

      This logo isn't bad at all. I'd like to see the wings be a little less curvy and a little more martial-looking. But don't spend a heck of a lot more time on the logo, there are plenty of great games with terrible logos and awful games with amazing logos.

    24. secondOption on May 16, 2012

      If it's not final, why not ask the pledges to submit a design as well? :)
      I'm sure some of us are pretty handy w/ vector/shop

      Agree on some of the comments above, the logo looks a bit rough around the edges, can use further refining

    25. Oliver Janoschek on May 16, 2012

      This logo has some serious issues, even more than the old one

      1. It has too many shapes! good logos are simple; less shapes equals more clarity and impact.

      2. There are too many different "strengths" of the negative spaces, try to keep them unified. Make the negative spaces with though about the volume your positive spaces take up. For example make the one between the wings and the circle with the starship inside stronger (at least twice as it is now). you have to give your shapes room to breath, the bigger the base shape the bigger the negative space needs to be, the biggest positive shape "defines" the strength of the negative spaces. The "bow" negative space in the wing has another issue; it clashes with the bevel effect and color gradient, which is not too good for its readability.

      3. The top star feels very detached from the rest of the logo and is too small compared to the rest of the logo, which seems to be very massive compared, my suggestion would be to beef it up or loose it completely

      4. A super strong bevel effect like this does not add to the beauty and readability of a logo, and in this case makes it a lot worse as it clashes with the light in between "starlight inception", you'd assume the shadows would be on top, the lit part at the bottom, so it would fit to the position of this light.

      5. using a standard photoshop lens flare is probably not the best idea for a logo, I'd tone that one down quite a bit; it distracts from the font, which should be the star of the show, not the effect. the blue flare is fine for me as it underlines the logo in a nice way.

      I know this critique is relatively hard and might seem harsh, but as a professional logo&user Interface designer I only have the best intentions, I want this baby to shine!

    29. Archon on May 16, 2012

      My first reaction was bad, because of the "horns" like Ken and Davy pointed out.
      Now I'm getting used to it.

    30. Octavio on May 16, 2012

      I agree with Ken on thought #2. I also thought of a horn or claw of some sort before I thought wing of any kind.

    31. Octavio on May 16, 2012

      I like certain elements of this design like the addition of the star and the planet with the starfighter,but the curved wing loses the coolness factor. I think the wing would be better in an M shape, like that of an attacking eagle or so.

    32. Ethan (10y old) & Ken (OLD) Erickson
      on May 16, 2012

      My thoughts:
      1) Overall, quite nice.
      2) My first thought was that the wings look like horns or a mechanical claw - the concept of 'wings' did not immediately jump out at me. One option would be to narrow (reduce the thickness of) the base of the wings (where they connect to the circle at the bottom).
      3) When I see wings I expect to see a head. Perhaps the star floating in the negative field could be lowered slightly to give the impression that it is part of the winged body making it look like a head.
      Great job, everyone! Keep up the good work.

    33. James Patton on May 16, 2012

      I think it's fine. I like the fact you've kept the inverted starfighter, and still managed to make the symbol look like it has wings. Not sure I get the "inverted planet" (it's more like, well, an arc) but I like the fact you've symbolically included fallen soldiers in the logo in some way.

    34. David on May 16, 2012

      I've never hated a logo- nah, I'm just kidding, it's awesome :)

    35. DarthDavy on May 16, 2012

      To be honest, I don't like it. I mostly dislike the assymmetrical star in the circle at the bottom. And secondly, the two sides look more like horns of an animal than something that should resemble as wings. I would say: back to the drawing table. I don't see wings in that logo at all (more like bull horns).

      @Chris Patterson

      I don't think the two logos are even slightly close, except for a vague outline of an inverted chevron on black.

    43. KazuyaDarklight on May 16, 2012

      I'm not sure I would go so far as to call them frighteningly similar myself.

      So far as the new logo goes, I'm down with it, nice work guys. The only thing I will say is that I'm not really "seeing" the planet in the negative space, to my eye its just gap space between the wings and the star. Maybe if the wings swept up higher and started to encircle the start? Having said that, I don't care personally, it doesn't look wrong, I wouldn't have thought anything of it if you hadn't said something.

      So, did anyone point out to the AirForce that they're using a logo frighteningly similar to this? Honestly, that was the first thing I thought of with the initial logo, not the AF one (and I served).
