About this project
This fountain pen was conceived for the writer, the designer, the entrepreneur, and the minimalist. It was designed for those who are passionate, creative, and aspiring. It is a fine writing instrument designed for the Visionnaire.
It is not just a tool for communication but rather an instrument that aids the expression of the creative mind. It embodies soul and character.
The design was not for the object itself but for who and what it represents. The moment you pick it up, theres a subtle and distinct feeling. It is cool to the touch and has weight. You recognize it, you feel it, there's depth, and there's a connection between yourself and the instrument.
Not only does a pen have the basic foundation of communicating your message, it can define your goals and dreams. As simple as it is, a pen can bind an agreement or even a lifelong commitment. When in use, it should be an experience and it should capture that moment in history.

My name is Morgan Combes and I studied mechanical engineering at Lycee Technique De Baudre, France. I am a product designer, food connoisseur, and father.
The idea of Visionnaire came about on the day my son was born. It was a scary feeling knowing I had just become a father. There I was, with a pen in hand about to sign my son's birth certificate. I felt like it was a moment that lasted forever. I knew as soon as I signed that piece of paper, it was official. I looked at the birth certificate and looked at the pen in my hand. "Johnny's Bait and Tackle" was written on the edge of the cheaply made pen. How did this pen end up at a Kaiser hospital? It was an odd feeling signing a document of such significant sentimental value with a pen that advertised bait and tackle gear.
From then on, I decided to create the ultimate pen. Just like a pocket knife or wedding ring, a pen should have the same sense of value. It should be something that can be handed down generations. Writing with Visionnaire is an experience, and when the cap clicks shut, it should capture that experience much like a journal or diary. Every time you pick up the pen, there is a distinct connection between you and the object itself. Not only does a pen have to have functionality, it needs to have soul.
I wanted to create a timeless piece that could be passed onto my son, a meaningful piece of art that he can use and cherish. Perhaps my son would have it in his hands when it comes time signing his son's birth certificate.
BELOW WHOLESALE PRICING
It all starts with a pen, a piece of paper, and a vision.
With the help of crowd-sourcing, we are able to make our dreams come to life. In addition, we are working DIRECT with the best manufacturer in the industry (read below). The Visionnaire is offered at near cost, BELOW wholesale pricing. Our goal is simple, to provide a high-quality fountain pen for the Visionnaires of today.
Future Pricing: Visionnaire will be retailed at $80 after Kickstarter funding is completed.
Manufacturing and Quality
I wanted to create a minimalistic design that was timeless. I wanted the name of the pen to have presence as well as definition. To design Visionnaire, I sought professional help from Theory Mob. Vincent Ng, a designer for Theory Mob, really helped me to understand the aspects of turning a design into a solidified product. Feel free to explore the early renderings of the Visionnaire.
With Theory Mob, we have spent the past 6 months finalizing the design of Visionnaire as well as preparing manufacturing. We were able to partner and work with one of the best manufacturer in the industry. Our manufacturer have spent the past 25 years perfecting fine writing instruments for the top high end industry leaders. Luckily the first production sample we received (Visionnaires in the pics and video) were perfect. Needless to say the fountain pens were flawless and even performed better than any other pen I had ever owned.
We have all the final designs and even production ready to go. We just need enough funding to full-fill our first initial minimum order quantity.

Risks and challenges
If Visionnaire gets funded, then we will make sure everything goes according to plan to meet the deadline date. As soon as funding is done, production of Visionnaire will start. Expected shipping dates approximately December, 2013.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Visionnaire is compatible with most inks cartridges (standard international long or short) on the market available at any office supply store. You can purchase a Parker bottle of ink at a local art supply store or amazon for about $9.
We will be packaging the Visionnaire in a low profile microfiber sleeve.
Both Visionnaires are made mainly of copper. The Noir has a black lacquer finish while the Chrome has a polished chrome finish. The clips are made of stainless steel. The nib is Iridium Point Germany (German Iridium-alloy point).
The Visionnaire is designed with a polished round nib. It does not have any leaking issues. You can adjust the pressure of the ink output by twisting the ink cartridge inside. I personally keep it in my pocket everyday and I never had any leak issue to this day.
Lifetime warranty. I will make sure that your Visionnaire pen is free of defects before sending it.
However if it happen to be defective, just mail it back and I will send you a new one.
YES! We have designed the Visionnaire to have a rounded medium precision nib.
From all the writing and doodling I have done one print paper and notebook (Moleskine):
it is the about the same as a ballpoint (such as Uniball Signo) and less than a ultra-fine Sharpie.
So unless you go over the same area back and forth multiple times, I haven't had any problematic bleed that would prevent to write on the other side of the page.
What size is the nib?
It is standard Medium (it traces a line the thickness of a 0.5mm fine ballpoint pen)
Are you offering different size nibs?
I most likely will if there is a demand high enough, but for the time being, I prefer to focus on making sure I will be able to deliver all the orders on time before modifying the design or trying to offer too may options.
Can I change the nib?
Technically you can. I do not recommend as it might damage the pen in time and the warranty is voided.
What shape is the tip?
The tip is round.
My manufacturing partner is located in China.
The lower overhead cost and large production quantities allows the Visionnaire to be made of high quality parts, have a perfect fit and finish, and being offered at a lower price point.
The contractor I have partnered with has more than 25 years of experience in making high quality pens.
So the fit and finish as well as the materials, and the "savoir-faire" are excellent.
At this point I will hire some people, here in San Francisco, to help me with shipping the orders.
I do have some experience (from HALO project) in setting up a system allowing to deliver a large amount of orders in a short period of time.
