I am writing what may be the first commercially available Sudanese cookbook. As well as providing many delicious recipes, the cookbook will focus on introducing the Sudan, its history, culture and customs around food. The book also sheds light on the social and political issues which currently affect the Sudan in order to have a deeper understanding of the food being described and country's current state.

The money raised will be used on various tasks to allow the projected to be completed:

- I would like to travel to Sudan to gather information on regional recipes, visit university archives of Sudanese cuisine, interview key contributors and gather food and cultural photographs. Some rewards will be collected on the trip.

- I would like a reasonably priced SLR camera to photograph the food and culture on the trip

- Considering self publishing and printing costs. These depend on the printer, number of pages, images and copies required but are likely to cost approx. £1,500 -£2,000 to print around 500 books.

Risks and challenges

The finished cookbook is still in its formative stages with writing and gathering of information still going on. Once the material has been edited and ready to print, the process of distributing product rewards may begin and the eventual sale and distribution of the book. Rewards gathered on the research trip will be delivered upon my return.

I am planning to self publish the book and then hopefully get a publishing deal after the initial interest of the self published edition. I will be negotiating a deal with book printers/self publishing companies which is favourable for the project in order to calculate a fair final book price of around £20.
