An enclosure for a variety of small format 3D printers
BuzzBox is designed to help makers, inventors and hobbyists tackle the most common problems facing the 3D printing process. It’s the world’s first customizable enclosure that combines the storage of material and tools while keeping heat in and filtering outgoing air.
Its internal dimensions are 12″ x 16″ x 11″ (Width x Height x Depth) and supports many small format 3D printers including brands like:

Why did we make BuzzBox?
Every 3D printer enthusiast has been there: warped prints, curling edges, cracking, harmful fumes, noise, and heat loss. The list goes on and on!
We asked, “How can we solve these problems?” “What if we could build something that stored materials and tools?” We wanted a product that looked great while being versatile, too. Thus, BuzzBox was born.
Solving the most common problems plaguing the printing process
Designed with utility and style in mind
Keep the heat in and filter the fumes
The passive filtering system operates by letting the heat generated from the printing process draw air through the inlet filter, located on the right side, through to the outlet filter, located on top. This system captures and reduces the fumes released outside of the chamber. It’s also designed to keep the internal temperature just right for perfect prints every time.
Attractive high air flow honeycomb filter holder assemblies secured with wingnuts. Utilizing activated carbon filters that are widely available, affordable and easy to replace.
A place to store exactly what you need
Multiple tool holders that can hold the things you use the most; like printer base plates (printing surface), caliper, screwdriver, plastic cutting chisels, side cutter, scraper and etc.
Stores up to three spools of filament utilizing a universal filament reel holder adapter. From there, different size filament reel holder spindles can be inserted to support your favorite brands of filament. Allowing for quick and easy access/removal of filament spools.
Economical, rigid and stylish
Incorporating an all laser-cut acrylic design with strategically placed structural components that yield a professional, rugged and inexpensive frame.
To minimize acrylic material fatigue, special relief features have been designed in along with plastic hardware in critical places.
Accessible and simple
Consideration for ease of use was designed from the bottom up, including magnetic door latches, cable access, open pin hinges to remove door easy replacement of carbon filters and reducing sliding/vibration with rubber grip feet.
Open source, customizable hardware
Mix, match and create your style. All hardware parts are open source (excluding the acrylic design) and are posted to Thingiverse.
The parts have a Creative Commons - Attribution - Share Alike license. Which means that you can download, share, modify and create new parts of BuzzBox whenever you'd like! Visit BuzzBox's Thingiverse page to get started.
Expandable and upgradeable
With your pledge of $450 or more, we’ll design and incorporate LED lighting and an active fan system with controller for more performance.
BuzzBox also comes in a dual door version. To make this happen, a single panel is swapped out with a door assembly. Great for situations when accessibility is needed from the front and back.
Stylish and attractive honeycomb shaped coasters with the BuzzBox logo laser engraved onto the back side. Perfect for keeping those beverages off of the benchtop. Material is made from high quality cast 1/4" Acrylic. You'll get four (4x) of these coasters per pledge of $25 or more.
We need your help to manufacture the first run of BuzzBoxes. Over the last two years we’ve been developing new products, BuzzBox is the latest and most exciting of them. We have the laser cutter, 3D printers and tools. The only problem is that material is a huge expense and we need to buy in bulk to make it work! If you like the product, show us support and pledge whatever amount you can do to make BuzzBox a reality.
Where is the project at now?
Buzzbox was started in early 2014 and has undergone five total revisions:
- Prototype is built and fully functional
- Assembly instructions have been produced
- Manufacturing is in place
- Estimated delivery is as soon as March of 2015 (Please check tiers for estimated date)
- Design of the lighting and fan kit (pledge $450 or more)
- Bulk materials are left to purchase and are quite expensive - We need your help for the first run!

How did we get here?
BuzzBox was designed and developed by Apogee Science and Crystal Water Designs and is entirely American Made. This project is a pilot effort via Vincennes University of Jasper (VUJC) to mentor local students and grow entrepreneurship in our local community.
