A beautifully designed, fun & exciting card game – you can plant!
oh/crop is based on the popular trick-taking card game ‹Oh Hell›, but with a sustainable twist: all cards are biodegradable and carry seeds you can plant at home & in your garden. Just add a little soil, water, love & sunshine and our seed cards will grow into beautiful culinary herbs such as parsley, chives & sweet basil.
Water, love & sunshine.
It's all about planting & growing, and so is the oh/crop game-play: every card showing a different herb in one of the four seasons. You will plant & reap, take crops & estimate your harvest, compete with & manipulate your fellow players, to finally win the game by achieving the biggest output. Please beware, this game is fun, but also mind-boggling, friends-testing & rage-provoking!
Play & plant. Then play again.
At the end of every match, all players except the winner have the responsibility to take some green action, taking home a card and planting it! So if you play a lot, with time your deck will be smaller & smaller, growing into herb plants. But don't worry, the game is designed to work with fewer & fewer cards, until the very last card. Well, almost.
Each card carries enough seeds for one nice herb plant. That means that each full deck grows up to 58 plants! For your home & your friends' homes & your families' homes & your friends' families' homes...
The more the merrier.
You can play oh/crop with 3 to 6 players. Or you can combine two decks for an even larger number of players. There is no experience of playing cards required. The rules are simple and with only a few test rounds (using for example 5 to 7 cards each player) you get the hang of it. Age 10 plus. Or younger when extra smart :)
Or just play what you want?
Yes, all cards are designed comparable to a standard playing cards deck. So if you like the design & the planting, but just want to play any other card game and then plant it all at once – go ahead! You can!
The oh/crop card decks are entirely made out of premium biodegradable & sustainable seed paper. That allows for rich details on the printing, as well as a high rate of seeds to grow. And in the end they will have dissolved themselves completely. Nice.
Our cards feature the basic elements everyone knows from a standard playing cards deck: a number or letter in the corners indicating the card's value. Including the ace – which we call ‹earth› – and also in our agricultural terms: the ‹Peasent›, ‹Queen› & ‹Ruler›. And not to miss of course, the herbs.
The design plays with illustrations exclusively created for this card deck and fine typography. With the intention to create a contemporary take on the traditional playing cards. And also to use a rather reduced amount of paint in production.
Oh, sweet basil.
Every card carries seeds of a distinct herb-mix, depending on availability, season and location this mix might vary. Our current selection includes parsley, chives & sweet basil, and we are working on a wider range like sage, peppermint, rosemary, thyme & oregano.
The oh/crop decks.
One full deck consists of 58 cards, from 2 to Ace and 6 prediction cards. Each one individually designed and beautifully printed. The small deck contains a reduced standard cut of 36 cards, from 7 to Ace and 4 prediction cards.
The small cut (in Germany it's called a ‹Skat›-deck) is same as playable as the full deck, we'd recommend an ideal of four players here though – instead of six.
Plants grow slow – so testing can be a long process. In a rather short amount of time, as much different seed papers as possible have been tested to find the right one. Same for the game design and game-play which still had to work with fewer cards in the deck.
Oh/crop is part of the wonderful intitiative of ‹Quickstarter›, a series of campaigns & projects that challenges one's creativity to develop an idea in a very short amount of time and with little resources. They all follow the same criteria:
- Designing, prototyping and manufacturing should not take longer than 3 months.
- The campaign has to be under 20 days.
- The funding goal has to be below € 1.000.
- The main reward has to be offered under € 50.
Risks and challenges
We are testing samples and prints from and with experienced producers and printers of sustainable, biodegradable seed paper. Our aim is to achieve the highest quality and make it as handmade as possible. To be part and in control of the production, so as to make sure we get the most sustainable result. We managed to narrow it down to a few specific paper types from great suppliers. But final testings on providers, paper, printing and printing-technique are still in process. And so is the shipping and location of production, since sending seeds across borders is restricted. That means we might end up printing and shipping independently each for US and EU. However, all options have been well thought through, calculated and planned with our current suppliers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
