About this project
'Daydreams & Nightdreams' is an in-development children's book, written by Cory Doyle and illustrated by Jeff Karl. We are asking for your support to help us bring it to a finish.
What is the book about?
'Daydreams & Nightdreams' is a fantasy tale that follows the dreams of two slumbering children, named Adam and Evelyn, each of whom have their own story. The reader follows along as each character explores their respective dreamland.
Adam is having a daydream, so in that tale the reader follows his adventure through the Land of Daydreams. Conversely, Evelyn is sleeping at night; the reader follows her on a journey through the Land of Nightdreams.
Each character encounters four guardians, each of whom help Adam and Evelyn along in their journey so they may reach their dream's end: the Great Dream Tree, where the two dreamers come face to face with each other for the first time.
What makes Daydreams and Nightdreams unique or special?
First of all, it's not a purely linear story. It's actually two separate stories that meet in the "middle" of the book. Meaning, if you were to take the physical version of the book, on one cover would be the beginning of Adam's story, Daydreams, and, if you were to flip the book over to the opposite cover, you would find the beginning of Evelyn's story, Nightdreams. In other words, both stories, in the end, actually meet; finish at the exact same place: the Great Dream Tree. And even before the ending, there are several places where the stories overlap and feed into one another.
The second feature of this story that (I think) makes it special is it's having been written entirely in lyrical verse. This gives the story a fantastic and majestic quality, which has been expressed in the visual design of the book. The "look" we are trying for in the design on this book is an old, leather-bound, Victorian storybook that you'd find on an old dusty shelf in the back of some forgotten library.
Why the need for a Kickstarter project?
First and foremost, the author and I need to raise money to publish the book. To start, we'd like to raise at least enough money to have an initial printing of 100 books. We both feel it's necessary to self publish since we seem to be breaking so many conventions. Everything from the tone of the book, to the way it's constructed - with two stories meeting in the middle - are things that set our book apart. We believe these qualities make our book unique and it is very important to us to maintain that vision. What a publisher might see as "risky" the author and I feel is what makes our book truly worthwhile.
Secondly, only the Daydreams side of the book is drawn currently. Adam's story is completely finished and we are looking to raise some money in order to help cover overhead costs to finish the book out as quickly as possible. We want to complete Evelyn's Nightdream tale.
Lastly, we want to try and create a little bit of buzz about the book. The more people who are talking about the book, the better. So, if you can't currently donate any money, but would still like support our project, simply posting this page some place where people will see it would be a tremendous help. So, thank you in advance!
*** Note about perks: Despite the estimated delivery date of October 2012, all perks will be sent out as soon as they are ready and funding is complete.
Should you make a donation that qualifies you to claim the digital version of Daydreams and Nightdreams as a perk, you won't be kept waiting for the completion of the book - entirely. You will be sent a digital version of just the "Daydreams" side of the book in the interim. This way you're not being penalized for being more generous. ***
Below are the selected illustrations that are available for print, to be claimed as perks:
I was informed by Kickstarter that this is perfectly normal. Currently, only Amazon offers the unique kind of credit card billing that Kickstarter requires to function. If you've been redirected to Amazon it's most likely because you need to fill out some payment information so that your credit card may be charged after funding is complete.
