A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
Wild World Community aims to be the go-to area for all things wildlife! It will be a global community connecting everyone with an interest in wildlife and conservation, both professionals and hobby naturalists. One of its major focus areas is to make conservation easy and accessible to all. Please read my bio for a bit more background, the reason behind it and how it came to be.
The Network - Features
The network itself is set up like your everyday social network, with a personal profile that includes a news feed, messaging system, adding friends, uploading media, joining and/or creating groups, as well as keeping track of your own species lists (on a global and national level). Here's an example of how it looks:
The adding of species observations is a fun and popular feature available to all members, and most of the world's mammals, birds and reptiles will be included (except species where there is a high risk of poaching and illegal trafficking). You can search observations by species or type of animals (for example: cats or birds of prey) and location, with filters such as age, sex and number of individuals. When adding observations you play a great part in conservation and wildlife management!
As a member you also get access to the Travel Directory and Business Directory, where businesses, such as conservation organizations, tour operators, accommodation, and even nature reserves can be found and searched for (if they are registered). With the Travel Directory you can plan your eco-friendly wildlife holidays by searching the various categories and use detailed filters to narrow the search for better and more fitting results. You can befriend and interact with all registered businesses in the community itself, just as you can with other members.
You can also look up country profiles. Here you can get the latest observations, the country's species lists, see the top wildlife places, and read people's trip reports for that country. After you've traveled yourself, you can add your own trip report and photos to the country profile.
Eventually there will be detailed species profiles for every animal in the observation catalogue, where all members can upload images, videos, add comments, and even add facts and information on the species. All species observations will also be included and searchable on these profiles. For some species, particularly birds, there will be audio files of songs and sounds you can play to help ID species when outside.
There's a Forum with plenty of sub-forums to allow for discussions on everything wildlife. There are areas set aside for all sorts of topics, such as travel, photography, conservation, research, and more..
There's also a few features set aside for members to get creative and share their own stories and projects. Every member gets their own Blog where they can write about anything they like within the realm of wildlife and nature and share it with the community. This is great for researchers who'd want to share what they do. There's also a Projects feature, where members can create and share photography and art projects. Both projects and blog posts are featured on the community News page.
One of the more important features is the ability to raise money to important research, conservation and other wildlife projects through fundraising campaigns. This feature will allow anyone to directly support projects they feel passionate about and in that way become directly involved with important work to save our wildlife.
If you own a business or organization you can set up a Business Account for a small monthly fee. Business account members get to add their business in the Business and Travel Directories, as well as the opportunity to publish ads throughout the network, such as in the sidebars, in the news feed, and in the forums. When having your own profile it's also easier to make yourself visible in the community, by posting updates, writing blog posts, and be active in forums, groups and various discussions throughout the site.
That's all the features currently included in Wild World Community, but more might come with time. You want to check it out yourself? Here's a link: https://wildworldcommunity.com/
Please give feedback on anything and everything on the site, from tiny errors to major issues. I need to hear it all to make it as good as it can be! If you like the idea, don't forget to share!
There's also a simple Android app for easy access to the mobile friendly version of the community available for free at Google Play. It also makes it easier to add observations when outside. No version for Apple and Windows I'm afraid. However, all mobile web browser will give an almost identical experience, the app is just for easy access. A much improved app for all mobile systems might come at some point down the line.
Don't forget to follow the community for updates on its Facebook page!
I've worked on Wild World Community continuously for the last 18 months and spent every penny I could spare from my savings to get it as good as I possibly can. I have now finally managed to get it set up and ready for public eyes. It is by no means finished, and a lot of work still needs to be done, but most functions and features are there and ready for members to use and test out.
It is now time to take the next step and get it out slow and steady to the masses. For this to happen successfully I need all the help I can get, both financially and through any other form of support from you guys. Let's get into the specifics of where the money is needed the most:
1. Keeping the website up and running
Finances are needed for crucial aspects of the website to function properly and securely for everyone at all times, such as dedicated servers, security plans, and a host of other functions and features throughout the network working in the background. This is already taking a huge toll on my savings. I therefore need financial help to keep it up in the long run and for the eventual upgrades needed in the future when traffic increases. Running such an ambitious and feature-rich website is not cheap.
2. Improving, expanding and adding features
This is a network with a lot of features. Most of it is running quite well, but there will always be room for improvement and new features. This will almost always cost money, and sometimes it can be very expensive. Adding the necessary content to the website is also extremely time consuming, and basically a full time job in its own. Any extra money will allow me to focus more on adding this content. Hiring professionals to help improve and optimize the network is also on the cards, but a bit further down the line.
3. Networking & Marketing
As far as financial help goes, this is probably where it is needed the most. It's important to have enough money to keep the website alive, but this is where its survival hopefully will be assured. Wild World Community is a massive endeavor and it is not possible for just one person to develop this network and keep it alive in the long run, neither financially, nor physically. I therefore need to find potential partners and investors willing to take active part in the project and its future development. Going to various events, conferences and meetings will be crucial here. I also need to spend more time and money on getting the word out through different channels. The more people know about the community, the more noise it will make.
To sum it up. Here's what your money will help with directly: Keeping the community alive, making it better, expansion and getting more people involved. The campaign goal won't secure the future of Wild World Community by any means, but it will definitely provide a start capital to get there!
Currency Exchange Rates
Because I'm based in Norway my project goal and rewards are displayed in my local currency Norwegian Krone (NOK). As this is an international project, backers are likely to be from all over. I've therefore added what my goal is (approximately) in the most popular currencies:
Goal Exchange Rates
6,500 USD | 100 NOK = 13 USD
5,500 EUR | 100 NOK = 11 EUR
5,000 GBP | 100 NOK = 10 GBP
Risks and challenges
Major challenges is to get enough money and manpower to keep it alive in the long run. There is a danger that I eventually will have to focus more on other work to keep myself afloat if I don't succeed in getting enough support. If so happens, this website won't get the attention and financial support it needs and will eventually have to be shut down or paused indefinitely. Keeping it alive and running is very much a full time job, and then some, and takes its toll financially.
No matter what happens, however, I won't give up. If it's one thing I've learned so far, it's that I will do anything and everything to keep this community up and running. I've had plenty of stumbling blocks on my way up to this point, sometimes to the point of not seeing any solution or way forward. Eventually I've managed to overcome them, either on my own, or with the help of the great support community that exists out there for a self-taught web developer like myself.
I've done what I can on my own thus far, and now it's time to give you the opportunity to be a part in its future development!
There are more than one way of doing this:
- Pledge your support here with any sum, and I will be forever grateful!
- Share both the campaign and community far and wide!
- Register at the community, be active and give feedback on how it works!
