Heroes & Treasure™ was our successful 2018 Kickstarter for an RPG board game that could be played by parents with their kids as young as four years old.
Now we bring you the first expansion campaign, Darkness & Light. It follows the adventures of the base campaign, letting players use their tenth-level characters in an all-new scenario, with new monsters, new allies, and even new map tiles.
The original campaign was designed to teach basic fantasy role-playing concepts to kids (and adults!) with little or no experience. Fighters, Clerics, Goblins, Attack Dice, Hit Points, Potions, and all that. Now that players are familiar with those, Darkness & Light has more character interaction, descriptions, and decisions to make, expanding from core concepts into the actual "playing a role" aspect of RPGs, while still keeping the gameplay simple enough for young children. The plot concepts are roughly the level of a simple first-grade chapter book, like the Rainbow Fairies and that sort of thing (though the game still does not require that the players know how to read). We take our age ratings seriously here; there are already enough "Age 4+" games out there that no kindergartner could really play.
If you're new to the Heroes & Treasure universe, the original campaign is available here at a discount, and you can get the original plus this expansion for an even better discount.
Fresh off your epic victory against the Goblin hordes in Heroes & Treasure, your band of adventurers returns to the Inn to celebrate. Barely has the root beer begun to flow when a runner from the Elven kingdoms bursts through the door. It seems that tales of your victory are already being sung by bards throughout the lands, and the Light Elves need your help.
Several members of the Light Elf nation have been taken prisoner by members of the mysterious Dark Elf clan, and the rulers need some talented outsiders for a rescue and discovery mission before the two groups end up in a war that nobody really wants.
The Dark Elf race is a race of warriors, each of whom has a different magical attunement, giving them extra powers ranging from healing to speed to elemental control. You can never be quite sure what you're going to encounter...
Across a full set of new missions, you strive to rescue the missing elves and learn the truth behind the mysterious disappearances. Can you do it?
I'm very excited to again be working with Xin Ye, the illustrator for the popular Erfworld webcomic. I think the quality of her art speaks for itself, and her clean style is perfectly suited for a game that can be played by children.
We had a great response to our special custom-artwork rewards in the first campaign, and Xin has graciously agreed to do some more artwork for people as part of a few limited-subscription pledges. You can get a personalized character you can use to play Heroes & Treasure, or you can even have your likeness featured right in the box cover art!
With the backers' permission, here are a few of the characters she designed in our last Kickstarter:
The monsters are not all fully colored at this point, but there are at least sketches of everything.
Shipping in the USA is included.
Canada shipping DOES include pre-paid VAT/customs charges.
The non-US shipping costs are pretty high, because, well, it's expensive to ship things. The actual cost to get a box to Europe (with all fees paid) is about the same as the base price of the game, which seems crazy, but there it is. The only cheaper country is Canada, so we've separated that out to reduce costs for our Canadian backers. For the rest of you, the best way to reduce costs would be to group up with some friends and place a multi-box order. The unit shipping cost for an order of 3 is half that of a single piece.
In addition to those, we're also adding "social goals" to get two new character classes, for free print-and-play download. All we need are..
200 total Likes, ratings, and reviews on Board Game Geek: Clicking here lets you add Heroes & Treasure to your BGG collection if you haven't already, and then you can mark that you own it and enter a star rating and a comment if you choose to. Every rating and every review comment (one per person) will count toward the stretch total, and they will also make me feel good. Probably.
Only real reviews, please.. don't rate it if you haven't played it!
If you don't own Heroes & Treasure yet, please click the red heart on the main Heroes & Treasure page there to express your support! This will also count toward the stretch goal total.
Additionally, if we get to 400 Facebook followers OR 400 Facebook likes for the Heroes & Treasure page, we will also make punchout tokens of the two classes (two in each gender for a total of four) available online for a small fee, likely $5-6 (postage included) worldwide. These will not be included in the boxes.
While there are no reviews available yet for this expansion, here are some reviews of Heroes & Treasure and other related sites:

Risks and challenges
We learned a lot from our original Heroes & Treasure Kickstarter campaign. Even though we thought we had things pretty well locked down, there were some realities about the time required to manufacture and ship the games that we did not estimate correctly. However, when these delays threatened pre-Christmas arrival, we paid out of our own pockets to expedite the freight and get the product to our customers on time if at all possible.
So you can be sure we're motivated to do even better for this campaign.
We are using the same manufacturing and logistics services that we did for our last campaign, so we already know all the proper formats and requirements for the components. We also promise to leave more room in the box so you can fit the assembled pieces back in!
