About

The Show That Started in a Shoe

Getting Stoked began as a way to show the true and raw nature of the musicians and personalities I was interacting with on a regular basis. It was mainly local Phoenix bands and comedians with some unusual characters sprinkled throughout. The first few shows were done in my bedroom with a Nike SB high top sneaker holding my portable mic up for stability.

From there, I stumbled my way through 2017, focusing on tightening up my skills as a host and finding my voice. We moved the studio around my home a few different places, but it was still about as DIY as you could get. I purchased new equipment, but it was the cheap end of everything and I knew that we'd eventually outgrow it.

It was during this time that the show really picked up a following and people saw that what we were doing was more than just some fly-by-night hobby. Getting Stoked became the only place where artists could come and speak freely. There were no FCC constraints, no awkward interns bumbling through ads or shallow questions and no pressure to be politically correct. Guests understood that they could talk openly about their lives, pose questions on metaphysics and mental health, or just drink and laugh through vulgarity.

Higher ranking personalities in the Phoenix scene began taking notice, and we pulled in people like Psyko Steve, Robbie Pfeffer (Playboy Manbaby), YouTube star Echo Gillette and radio's Mo Rodriguez.

I also began reaching out to record labels to catch up national artists like with Sincere Engineer and Covet.

Live Shows

My background in live music and performance had been pulling at me since we started this thing, so I was extremely happy when we had the opportunity to bring the show into a live setting! In March of 2018, I got to sit down in the Nile Theater and host a live conversation with Chelsey Louise of Fairy Bones in front of a live audience.

Getting Better

Before long, interest in my history with mental health awareness became apparent, and I began a break off show called Getting Better, where I would bring in guests to talk about their history with mental health. The goal was to pull the curtains of personal darkness back and destigmatize mental illness.

Guests so far have included legal sex worker Lexie Joy, CJ from Paper Foxes and activist Rae Lydia.

New Studio and Looking forward

Towards the end of 2018, we expanded the studio out of my home and into a new spot with more room and accommodations. We incorporated a guest fridge, couch and plenty of room video streaming potential.

The listeners of the show have been beyond gracious in the support of this show, and we want to make it as best as we possibly can. The goal is to be fully operational with mounted cameras to stream live onto YouTube and Facebook and upgrade or current and outdated equipment.

Here's what we want to do:

  • Set up 2-3 fully functional mounted cameras
  • Stream directly to YouTube and Facebook
  • Upgrade the microphones
  • Upgrade the audio interface

I believe that everyone should be heard, and that they should be able to share their story without the barricades of censorship and lame hosts. This show has always been a labor of love for me, and I've been putting everything I have into it for the past 2 years. Luckily, that work has been paying off and we've been building a mighty community of listeners.

Unfortunately, the need for bigger and better has become too much for us to handle on our own.

Regardless of who is able to donate, I want to thank everyone for listening and getting us to the point we're at now. I never would have been able to keep doing this if people weren't listening, and I'm so blessed to have such a supportive community behind me. Thank you <3

Risks and challenges

$1,500 is a lot of money, but with that we'll be able to have this show up to date for many years to come. With that money, we should be fully functional and streaming video to your favorite platforms within the first quarter of 2019.
