FWYL (F**k What You Love) is a new zine about popstar crushes, featuring writing, design and illustrations from over 20 women and queer people. The zine celebrates the importance of crushing on musicians to marginalised music fans, and gives voice to passions that are often dismissed as silly or trite by cishet male music critics.
The essays in the collection are dedicated to crushes as diverse as Adele, Justin Moore, Gerard Way and Jarvis Cocker, with writers from around the world addressing subjects such as fanfiction writing, the discovery of self through queer crushes, teenage obsession, and the straight girl's attraction to the gay male popstar. A full list of contributors is available here.
The zine is a 56-page A5 publication, printed black & white inside with a dreamy pale pink cover. It's designed by Manchester-based graphic designer Kate Dunstone, with gorgeous images by illustrators Jessica Taylor and Reena Makwana. We're looking to raise £450 to cover the costs of printing 100 copies (minus Kickstarter's fees), plus postage costs. If we manage to raise more than that, we can print more copies, which will help the zine to be stocked in more places!
We're super excited about the zine and hope you are too! Thanks so much for thinking of supporting.
Risks and challenges
Even when a publication has content and design confirmed and ready to be put together, unexpected challenges can always crop up. As the editor, I'm dedicating my limited free time to the project, as are the designers and illustrators who I'm collaborating with. For this reason, delivery times for the publication could be subject to change, but I'll do my absolute best to get it out on schedule.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
