... a robot friend that runs on your smartphone. It wants to learn from your child by exploring the world together using the camera. Pika learns through a series of games where your child teaches it a particular skill. As Pika learns, it grows and evolves to open up further creative play.
Our Grand Vision: to use fun and play to help children become lifelong confident learners. This is the most critical skill in a fast changing world!
Press Kit: Here is our press kit for featuring Pika.
"While we teach, we learn" - Seneca.
Learning to teach deepens a child's knowledge, understanding and confidence. It's a concept that is thousands of years old and recent studies have backed up this theory with what scientists call 'the protégé effect'. It has been shown that students who learn to teach far out-perform those who learn for their own sake.
In Pika we have created an emotive and friendly character that acts as a 'teachable agent' for young kids.
Your child teaches Pika through themed games via the camera. Once something new has been learnt then a badge for that skill is unlocked and Pika can use the new skill for more open ended play.
Behind the scenes we have built our own custom Computer Vision algorithms to confirm what Pika is learning and to help it grow.
Our first themed game COLOURS makes the whole world into an open playground for colour spotting.
Pika gets kids to observe, capture and be immersed in their environment. It powers up kids' love of photography and encourages them to learn from their surroundings.
This is based on play-testing with over 100 kids to inform what is now Pika.
Pika will run on the following devices:
- iOS version: iOS 11 and above
- iPod Touch: iPod Touch 6th generation and above
- iPhones: iPhone 6 and above
Our recommended device for kids is iPod Touch 6th generation or re-purposing one of your old iPhones / iPods into a dedicated Pika camera!
"Pika encourages your child to explore the world visually in new and interesting ways. Through having to teach pika concepts like blue or yellow, children will start seeing how many shades of colours there are, encouraging them to be particularly observant and interested in their own environments." - Bim Malcolmson, Parent & Educator
“Both of our kids love taking photos using the smartphone but get tangled in the many options on the standard camera, so a child-friendly app will be brilliant!” — Becky Ghani, Parent
“I can see that my children love taking photos, Pika builds on this love by making photography even more immersive and playful” — Liz Lee, Parent
Pika started when Aisha (our founder) gave her daughter an old camera to play with. The camera was an instant hit but, as it was already on its last legs, it soon broke. Aisha began to research another camera to buy her and came across blue or pink shiny plastic options using legacy hardware and basic software. She reminisced about her own childhood cameras and wanted something better for her daughter so the seed of Pika was planted.
Over the past 18 months Aisha has grown the team to include developers, designers, inventors and parents. Most importantly we have play-tested with over 100 kids to inform what is now Pika.
As a team, we've taken that first idea to create not just a camera but a way for kids to explore the world around them through photography. While our childhood cameras were our initial inspiration, we're bringing the latest tech like Computer Vision and Augmented Reality to our ideas.
We want you and your kids to be part of how Pika develops and we believe Kickstarter is a great way to do that. By backing our campaign we start a relationship with you before we launch allowing you to be part of the development.
Your support will help us deliver on our mission of using fun and play to help children become lifelong confident learners. Starting with bringing our character Pika and our first game, COLOURS, to life.
Our core reward is digital and being seasoned app developers we know how to navigate any challenges with making Pika available on the Apple app store.
However, this is our first Kickstarter campaign. So, for our physical rewards we have sought advice from others who have successfully run and delivered on their campaigns.
We appreciate how complicated shipping can be and while we have a plan based on this research, we still may come across some unexpected challenges. Our aim is to be as transparent as possible and keep you posted.
Thanks for stopping by, reading, watching, backing and sharing.
Aisha and the Pika Vision team
Special shout out to all the parents and kids that have been play-testing Pika over the past 18 months and for being part of our video :)
Risks and challenges
We have over six years of app & mobile expertise. And sixteen years experience of building our own deeply technical products and consulting for clients.
Our main challenge here was running Computer Vision algorithms directly on a smart device. So, we expanded our team to include an AI & Computer Vision expert. The result is the Pika Primary Colour engine. Having tested this in-house we are confident it can power our Pika Colours game.
Our second challenge is making Pika as immersive as possible for kids. We play-tested our concepts with 100+ children over the past year. The more we learned the more Pika evolved.
We have full confidence in our team. They are designers, engineers, scientists and animators. We know we can make Pika awesome!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
