Greetings! My name is Jennifer Ghormley, I am a working artist and art educator. I utilize printmaking as my primary art making vehicle and source of visual expression.
In mid-July I will travel to Venice, Italy for a three-week artist's residency at the the Venice Printmaking Studio, located on the island of Murano. My goal for this residency project is to create a body of work that will visually reflect and respond to my experiences as I explore this famous region. The title of this project, Ancient and Beautiful will focus on reflections of decorative elements found amongst the historic architecture. These will be large-scale mixed process prints, combining woodcut, screenprint, and acrylic wash effects. I will then exhibit the prints at the conclusion of my residency period in their facilities, as well as other venues to be determined upon my return home in mid-August.
I have created this Kickstarter page to raise the funds necessary for this residency opportunity. Travel expenses, residency fees, and the cost of art materials are sure to be well beyond my Kickstarter fundraising goal. However, every little bit helps. In return for your contribution, you will receive one or more prints, depending on your pledge level. This will be a piece of my experience that I wish to share with you.
An artist's residency is a dedicated time and space where an artist can focus on creating and producing artwork. Another benefit is the ability to utilize facilities one may not have access to otherwise, for example a huge printing press! My residency goal is to explore the nooks and crannies of Venice, then translate reflective sketches and photos of decorative elements into large-scale woodcuts and screen prints. It is rare for me to have this opportunity to go abroad, and travel greatly enriches my artwork and inspires creativity. I am very excited and feel extremely fortunate to have this chance for such a valuable, unparalleled experience!
"What is a print?" you may ask. It is an in-depth artistic process involving several steps: 1) create a plate, or repeatable matrix. 2) apply ink to the plate. 3) run though printing press, or print by hand, onto paper or fabric. A few types of processes are: monotype, woodcut, screenprint, etching, engraving, lithography. Printmaking has a long history throughout culture, and was instrumental in dispersing information and images to the masses many years ago. Everyone has held a print without even realizing it - did you know the dollar bill is actually an Intaglio print? Some famous printmakers include: Katsushika Hokusai, Rembrandt, Picasso, Kathe Kollwitz, M.C. Escher, Andy Warhol, and many more.
Your valuable donation will assist me in achieving my project goals, as such a journey is financially daunting. Without going into detail, I will summarize by stating that this residency is a huge undertaking, and comes with a substantial price tag. It would not be at all possible without the generous support of people who I know, care for, and greatly appreciate. By becoming an art patron and making your contribution today, you will receive one or more hand-pulled prints at the conclusion of the residency, based on your pledge level. These pieces will be created exclusively for you as a token of appreciation and gratitude for your support. It will be much more than merely a print, but a little treasure of my experience, and it will be my privilege to share it with you!
Thank you for your contribution, I appreciate it very much! ;o)
