About

To develop the leading expo for sports data analytics by autumn 2016 & the following year, expand this into a larger B2C exhibition as a satellite to IAAF World Championship in London (5-13 August, 2017). The exhibition will focus on technology providers who are bringing advancements in capturing, storing and analyzing data to revolutionize every aspect of sport, from training to broadcasting to fan engagement. Speakers at the conference will include athletes, sports teams, federations, broadcasters, wearable technology providers, software and hardware firms. Whether you are an individual looking to improve your performance (or use the latest tech in your sporting pursuits) or a business leader looking to see how sport is driving innovation in data analytics, this event (and online interviews) will be of great interest to you.

In addition to establishing a convention, I will be building an online resource (eg. expert interviews, high-quality content), expanding on my existing blog - www.shutup-legs.com - which had training tips, sporting science insight and competition news.

This proposal addresses an event which would cover the ‘value chain’ of data analytics in sport.

The three main constituents are:

Sports Performance: Coaching staff, scouts and players are leveraging analytics to better understand the performance on their own teams as well as that of the opposition. Innovations in this space, for example, have lead to off-field tracking technology which is utilized by sports broadcasters.Data analytics are also being used to improve scouting, to detect new player unusual talent and evaluate players competitive capability.

Fan Engagement: Data analytics is at the center of broadcast sports production, providing relevant, real-time data to help spectators engage with the event. It is having an increasing role in multi-platform digital distribution, allowing fans to have data-sharing capabilities (everything from tweeting to providing better television coverage by leveraging photos and videos captured by mobile devices) and enabling sports production teams to monitor consumer uptake (gaining vital statistics for advertising negotiations).

Wearable technology: Sensors and biometric monitoring are being innovated by professional sports teams but the technology is filtering down to the lucrative consumer level, augmenting stadium/game-day experiences and allowing wearable smart devices to become available.

Risks and challenges

This is an exciting new area for sports and there is a number of event providers trying to work out how to set up an exhibition in this topic. I have been a conference/event provider for 7 years and alongside this experience, I have coached in New Zealand's national indoor velodrome. I have also been managing a sports science website for 18 months, which has generated 104,212 views between 2014-2015 (174,755 views in total). For a part-time blog to acquire this number of views, without an advertising budget, and in a competitive sector such as sports, signifies the interest in sports analytics/science; and hence my interest in building a dedicated convention.

Importantly, I also produce North America's leading conference in ‘Big Data in Clinical Development’ conference (see www.bigdataleadersforum.com).
