What is a selfie?
A selfie is a picture that you take of yourself. They're very popular on sites like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
What is the Selfie Portrait Project?
The Selfie Portrait Project is a unique experiential event in which everyone gets the chance to be a portrait artist.
In a fun environment, participants will have the opportunity not only to explore their own identity and perception of it, but also to interact with strangers in an unusually intimate way.
This participatory art experience will be a part of the New York City Figment Festival on Governor's Island June 8-9, 2013.
How does it work?
The Selfie Portrait Project will begin at a mirror wall we’ll construct at the Figment Festival and will finish online as a digital experience.
Here's how it will work:
Step 1 At our custom-made mirror wall, each participant will write a description of themselves. And, once they've completed their written selfie, they'll take a picture of themselves.
Step 2 The participant will then take someone else's written selfie and draw a portrait of that person based on their description.
Step 3: Finally, we will compile the photo, description, and drawn portrait, uploading each finished 3-part portrait to selfieportrait.me, as well as a Facebook and Instagram page dedicated to the project. The finished product will look something like this:
What Is The Figment Festival?
The Figment Festival is a free interactive and participatory art event that will take place on Governor's Island on June 8 - 9. Find out more about Figment here.
I'm not huge on taking photos of myself, however I have no problem writing about myself. So one day a few months ago I decided to write a description of a photo of myself and post it on my blog.
My friend (and now project co-creator) Kathreen Khavari saw my blog post, and decided that she would draw my picture based on my description.
And out of that experience, the Selfie Portrait Project was born.
I feel honored that the Figment Festival chose my project as one of those selected for Governor’s Island this summer.
What Your Donation Will Buy
Of course, this project will cost money. I am seeking your help to actually build the mirror wall, as well as buy art supplies, create signage to help guide participants through the experience, a scanner (so the images will be high quality), and rental equipment.
Risks and challenges
The unknown: I've never done anything like this, so one of my biggest challenges is figuring out exactly what’s involved in pulling off the event. BUT! I am blessed to have a group of very talented and generous friends who are donating their time and skills to help me make this dream a reality. A special shout to my talented woodworking friend Tony, who has agreed to help me build the mirror wall. In addition, the Figment Team provides truly amazing support to the selected artists. They give me courage to see this project through.
Volume: Last year Figment Festival hosted over 25,000 visitors. I’ll work with my curator to ensure that I am prepared for crowds, and I have a good workflow in place to make sure that we track and catalogue every description and portrait.
Mother Nature: This is an outdoor festival, and mother nature doesn't take any orders, but I'm doing my best to manifest sunny skies for the weekend. Feel free to send us good weather vibes!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
