About this project
About the book
Imagine a book that opens eyes to the reality of life in the womb.
Imagine a new generation which recognizes that a pregnant woman is a mommy from the very first.
Imagine a toddler scrambling up into their mother's lap to ponder what it was like before they were born.
Imagine a love story that ignites the imaginations of children and adults alike.
Young children are fascinated by the idea that there was a time before they existed.Hello Mommy reassures them in lyrical language and beautiful imagery that mommy loved them right from the beginning, and was excited at the things they would do together. Toddlers will love the rhythm of the text, coupled with exploration of things they like best, such as fireflies, twinkling stars, and snowmen.
The bond between mother and child grows from the time mom discovers she is pregnant, right through adulthood. Hello Mommy is a magical conversation between a mother and the baby in her womb who will one day be a toddler, as she tells him of the things that they will do together, and the things that he will see once he is big enough.
Hello Mommy is meant to be read by an adult to a child, and contains repeated, rhythmic rhyming patterns. Illustrations will have a magical, wondrous quality, with wonder showing in the faces of the characters as they interact with the environment. In each pair of illustrations, a mother sits in a chair with her tummy growing as the child in her womb develops, month by month.
Hello Mommy's lyrical quality makes it a book that parents will enjoy reading repeatedly, as they play with the texture, pacing, and flow that come from repetition.

About the competition
The existence of titles such as On the Night You Were Born,Someday, and Ma! There's Nothing to do Here!shows that there is an interest in writing to children about life prior to their birth. Dr. Seuss even has one; Oh, Baby, the Places You'll Go! Hello Mommy is different from the other books because they are not conversational (between a mother and the child), and are primarily aimed at children older than toddlers. My book offers a fresh take on this universal theme.
How your contribution will be used
Project costs include illustration, book design, layout, and file generation, printing, eBook setup, shipping, and distribution, along with Kickstarter and Amazon donation processing fees.
Beautiful illustrations are extremely important for the book, and so a good portion of the funds generated will be used for that purpose. The sample image included with this project gives you a sense of the beauty I expect to present. It was created by the very talented Carol L. Douglas. Unfortunately she is not able to do the rest of the illustration for the book, but the piece she created is inspirational.
Hello Mommy will be a high quality hard cover book, but will be created as economically as possible. Funds not needed for developing the book will be used for printing additional copies.
Risks and challenges
Hello Mommy -will- become a reality. It's just a matter of when.
The other children's books I have written may or may not get published. But this one is special, with special meaning and purpose. Because of that, the risks are related only to slowdowns in schedule and increases in costs, but not to the eventual reality of the book's existence.
While I've been published in book, magazine, newspaper, and online form, I've not self-published. Hello Mommy will be the first. Lack of experience inherently introduces risk, but I'm in a community filled with writers of all kinds, and I work with a group of children's writers who have done it before. I'll rely on them to help avoid pitfalls.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
