Where Is Joel Baum is a short film about how a tragic accident causes unexpected consequences in the home of a Hasidic rabbi in contemporary Brooklyn.
I started producing films through Palinka Pictures (named after my favorite drink) and through the films I’ve made, I've learned to creatively stretch my filmmaking dollar. I am asking now if you would get involved with making this film a reality through kickstarter.
In 2004 I released my first film which is grounded in my own experience in the Hasidic community, a documentary called Divan which follows a ancestral couch from Budapest to Brooklyn. I’ve produced and directed a few documentaries since then, including a walking tour of Hasidic Williamsburg, and I am now a graduate student in Fiction Screenwriting and Directing at City College of New York.
In this project, I continue my exploration of Hasidic life with similar themes (like community, faith, personal agency and responsibility), only this time in a fictionalized context.
We are in pre-production right now preparing to shoot the film in February.
I feel fortunate to be working with an extraordinarily talented cast and crew including Lynn Cohen (Munich, Sex in the City, etc.), Tibor Feldman (Damages, The Devil Wears Prada, etc.), Arthur French (Crooklyn, etc.), Shayna Levine (Palindromes, etc.), Elli, Danusia Trevino, and Luzer Twersky.
This is a labor of love for all who are involved and we hope get involved as well.
Where Your Money Will Go:
So far, the production has been made possible with the support and services of CCNY and thanks to the Feinstein Center for American Jewish History at Temple University, we have our first $1,000 grant.
However, additional funds are necessary to meet the budget needs: location fees, permits, art department, wardrobe, lighting, transportation, catering and, last but not least, editing and publicity.
With your help we can make this happen. The money raised will go directly to the film.
Any contribution would be appreciated. On the right side of the screen is the list of contribution and the rewards... every dollar counts.
We’ll have a premiere screening at the Cityvisions Festival at City College of New York and we will invite you to attend, whether you gave us one dollar or $5,000... and there are other rewards, but the biggest one is that we'll be very grateful that you helped us make this film possible.
