"Hong Kong Trilogy" USA Release @ Metrograph Theater and Sundance Go
This week, in the run-up to the 3 year anniversary of the Umbrella Movement (September 28th), we'll be releasing the film at the arthouse Metrograph Theater in downtown New York... culminating in an online release on SundanceGo.
Here is a great review we received in Film Comment, the magazine for the Film Society of the Lincoln Centre in New York.
"The English subtitles at the end of Christopher Doyle’s Hong Kong Trilogy tell us that the people we’ve just met are real Hong Kong people “sharing their DREAMS” before signing off, “Thanks for taking the time to LISTEN UP.” Wouldn’t it be nice if more films were so charmingly gracious? Doyle’s trilogy certainly has charm, which to a degree makes up for a sometimes frustrating sketchiness in terms of substance. The film—three linked semi-documentary vignettes about a location close to the director’s heart—feels as much a community project as a personal statement. It isn’t so much an example of the genre known as the “city symphony”—it’s more like a city jam."
Yes, they're right: not our "personal statement" but a "community project" that belongs to each of you.
Hope you'll be proud to share this review with your friends!
By the way, our next film "The White Girl" written and directed by Jenny and Chris will premiere at the BFI London Film Festival next month. It's a tropical-noir love story sat in the last fishing village of Hong Kong starring Angela Yuen and Joe Odagiri.
