Re: The world's smallest book ‘Teeny Ted From Turnip Town ’. In 2007 I was permitted access to a focused ion beam and scanning electron microscope at Simon Fraser University. In my time working with this equipment I designed and published an original work on a microchip, as an array of 30 tablets. The tablets contain the text of ‘Teeny Ted From Turnip Town’ complete with an ISBN. In 2012 I received a Guinness World Record confirming my creation of the smallest book yet made.
To give you a sense of scale, the array of tablets you see on the surface of this chip would all fit on the cross section of a human hair !
Re: THE GUINNESS WORLD RECORD, and how I got the idea to do this project. This year I received my Guinness World Record Certificate in the mail. 'Teeny Ted From Turnip Town' is cited as the smallest book yet made and listed as "the smallest reproduction of a printed book". Since I only produced the one original microchip, I got the idea to make an actual large print version for people to read without a scanning electron microscope.
Re:‘Teeny Ted From Turnip Town ’
Teeny Ted a wild rhyme by Malcolm Douglas Chaplin. It tells the tale of Teeny Ted and his triumph at the turnip contest at the annual county fair. The typography of the tablets looks like ancient cuneiform because I used the ion beam to carve the space surrounding each letter. Here are some sample tablets carved with a line resolution of 42 nanometers. A nanometer is one millionth of a millimeter.
The Typeface of 'Teeny Ted From Turnip Town' is puzzle which presents an entertaining challenge ! The Solutions are printed under each tablet.
About my Books
Please check the backers rewards to see how you could receive signed first edition copies of my other titles for a complete collection. To date I have written, illustrated and published four titles. I print them in short runs of 2000 copies. My books are designed digitally, printed using traditional offset lithography and are bound in hardcovers, complete with gold foil stamping and dust jackets. I pay close attention to book design and in 2009 my title 'Brussels Sprouts & Unicorns' won an Alcuin citation recognizing this book as the number one kids book design in Canada.
Sample Illustrations and Typography
My books often contain useful information after 'the end'. It has always been my understanding that the real gift of reading is knowledge. You will get a sense of my design from looking at these illustrations and typographic samples.

Re: the design of this project. I want to include the original scanning electron micrographs in combination with my colorful typography and brush drawings. ‘Teeny Ted From Turnip Town ’ will conclude with tables explaining scale from light years to nanometers. A nanometer is one millionth of a millimeter.
Why I chose to self publish
In 2004 I wrote my first book 'Ten Counting Cat'. The story is a rhyme which had been percolating for years, eventually completed using the circle of life as a metaphor to explain infinity. I illustrated it and then designed it with the hope of selling it to a real publisher. I produced a manuscript complete with an ISBN, which I stapled together and naively filed with Library and Archives Canada. I then sent copies to many publishers. All of them told me the same thing, they liked the book but since I had already "published" it they were not interested. As this was the case it seemed obvious to have it professionally printed and sell it myself. This was a lot of work and a pretty steep learning curve, but I found it rewarding and enjoyed the artistic freedom of doing it myself so much that I continued to publish by myself rather than work with larger publishers.
