What do you know about Syria and Syrians?
It seems that US/UK military action in Syria is imminent. The mainstream media is beating the war drum, and Administration officials on both sides of the Atlantic are taking turns issuing threats and promises.
But what do we really know about Syria, besides the bits and pieces that we are fed by the media? Back in 2006, 5 years after the start of the US led war in Afghanistan and 3 years after the US invasion of Iraq, 88 percent of US citizens aged 18 - 24 could not find Afghanistan on a map! How many, of any age group, could find Syria today?
An ignorant populace is much more likely to dehumanize a person or a country, than an educated one. Ignorance makes us susceptible to forces that would misinform us for their own agendas. I learned this firsthand during the Iraq War.
In an effort to not be a part of the ignorant masses, let's take the time to learn about the Syrian people. Most of it we know - they are humans just like us; mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, sons, and daughters trying to live in peace and safety. The differences between you and me and any Syrian (assuming you are not Syrian) are superficial. In a sense, we are all Syrians.
I've attached a map showing the location of Syria, and some pictures of Syrians. I've also included a link below to a short documentary on Syria. It was made before they started beating the war drum.
Better yet, let's find a Syrian and talk to them about the current situation. Perhaps they will have a different perspective than the media talking heads.
As always, thank you for your support!
