About this project
Food stylist Liza Jernow and photographer Tara Donne are creating a beautiful bi-annual gluten-free print magazine called Wild Apple. We are the New Gluten-Free.
We love food. We love making it and photographing it, but most of all, we’re Eaters. Eaters who have over thirteen years of gluten-free living under our belt. We know firsthand that when you’re on a gluten-free diet it’s easy to turn your focus towards lack. Yet there are so many great things out there that we can eat! So much is still delicious and accessible.
In Wild Apple, we train our eye to gorgeous, indulgent and useful food. Our recipes unfold through the seasons, with a focus on what’s available and natural. Our magazine will share love letters to friendly grains, simple snack ideas, well-tested recipes for classics, and menus with which to entertain friends or easily create weeknight meals. It will also cover inspiring international travel, city guides, profiles on interesting creative people, and roundups of beauty products--all of course gluten-free. We are here to help make life easier and to inspire adventure and exploration!
WHO WE ARE: The Wild Apple team is full of creatives who are the best in the business. Our Design Director, George McCalman has 14 years experience as a magazine art director and has won numerous design awards throughout his career. Before becoming a photographer, Tara Donne spent 5 years as a photo editor, managing budgets and assigning and producing shoots for national magazines. Liza Jernow spent years in the test kitchen at Martha Stewart prior to launching a food styling career and working with international advertising and magazine clients. There's no doubt that we are the people that will make this happen!
Most of our rewards include an issue of the magazine. Here's a little taste:
The Pancakes with Raspberry Sauce e-recipe card will include this beautiful illustration:
Everyone at the farmer's market will covet this fun tote:
Our gluten-free dessert themed postcards are perfect for writing sweet notes to friends:

New artwork is always a treat:
If you've made it this far down that means you're as excited as we are! We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support in creating something beautiful, useful, and relevant for the gluten-free community. We'd also like to thank the people behind our video! It was shot and edited by Squirl Corp with original composition by Jim Heffernan of TTO Productions. Thanks to Sidney Bensimon for our portrait too!
Risks and challenges
We realize that $76K sounds like a lot of money. It’s what we need to produce and distribute a high-quality, collectible print magazine full of well-tested recipes, hunger-inducing photographs, and inspiring travel stories. Our biggest challenge: simultaneously producing Issues One and Two while procuring advertising.
Your contributions will help pay for photo shoot production (studios, props, groceries, transportation), retouching, recipe testing (more groceries!) design of the magazine and website, and printing and distribution (this eats up the largest chunk). Donations will also go toward covering expenses that contributors might incur while researching, writing, or shooting for Wild Apple. Don't forget that Kickstarter and Amazon take a cut too--about 10%!
This campaign will fund some initial setup costs as well as the first issue in its entirety. We plan to use the inaugural issue as part of our media kit and in meetings with potential advertisers. The business model moving forward will be an advertising model. The number of brands creating gluten-free products is growing like crazy and we will provide just the right place for them to advertise. Our goal is to create relationships with brands that we believe in and enjoy.
Wild Apple is extremely proud to be collaborating with the top talent in our industry: contributing photographers, stylists, writers, and editors with years of experience in magazines. These contributors have worked for publications like Saveur, Bon Appetit, Cooking Light, Food & Wine, and Travel + Leisure, just to name a few. You can be sure that your donation will fund something high-quality and beautifully produced.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Yes! We will include a peppering of recipes that are vegan, vegetarian, paleo, dairy-free, egg-free, soy-free, and nut-free.
No. We are passionate about making a beautiful print experience. We are creating something that is meant to be lingered over, collected, shared with friends, and used time and time again.
