About this project

Alma del Mar (“Soul of the Sea”) is a K-8 Expeditionary Learning public charter school that opened in August 2011 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. We are committed to setting all of our students on a college trajectory and challenging them to be service-minded leaders.

The visual art curriculum at Alma del Mar focuses on scholars’ ability to discuss and create visual art within a rigorous practice. Scholars learn the vocabulary with which to describe and critique their artwork and that of their peers. They study art and artists from a variety of cultures, artistic periods, mediums and styles. Working within a large range of media, scholars are creating drawings, prints, paintings and sculptures. Older scholars in our art elective classes are able to propose a body of work that they create independently as they experiment with and grow their practice. The visual arts program works in concert with the broader curriculum to allow scholars the opportunity to expand their problem solving skills and modes of expression through the arts.

As a college-minded school, we strive in our visual art curriculum to instill in our scholars the idea that they are growing artists. It is vital to the growth of any artist that they have the opportunity to display their work and receive feedback from the public and their peers. As we have grown as a school it has become necessary for us to provide a more professional space for the scholars to display their artwork. A space that is deserving of all the hard work and growth that our scholars have made over the course of our school year.

Alma del Mar specifically strives to encourage low-income children to apply to the Alma del Mar lottery. Our neighborhood in the North end of New Bedford is among the lowest income communities in the United States. The challenges of poverty – including community violence, lack of adequate food and shelter, and high incarceration rates – often present significant barriers to the success of low-income children. Alma del Mar seeks to level the playing field by providing a high quality, college preparatory education and meaningful support services. Additionally, 26% of our scholars receive special education services and 13% are English language learners. We serve scholars with autism, epilepsy, ADHD, specific learning disabilities, dyslexia and dysgraphia; currently, all scholars are fully included in a general education classroom.

Risks and challenges

One challenge that we face with fully funding our project is storage. As we fully grow out into a K-8 charter school we will need to find storage for these walls. One solution we are considering is using our gallery walls throughout the school year in a variety of instructional spaces. The walls could be used to facilitate small pull out groups, testing areas, and spaces for our mentoring programs.
Our greatest risk is if our project is not fully funded. We would need to greatly reduce the number of submissions our scholars are able to put into the public show, taking from our scholars the opportunity to show the public and their peers the true breadth of their growth.
