Pichinku is a simple idea with sky-high possibilities. We work with natural dyeing techniques of the Peruvian Andes to produce unique yarns for modern makers.
Pichinku (pee-cheen-koo, meaning "little bird" in the native Quechua language) produces 100% naturally dyed alpaca and wool yarns, lovingly made in small batches by the skilled hands of women artisans.
Pichinku yarn is sustainable, environmentally friendly and socially conscious. No chemicals, no nonsense, just beautiful yarn!
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead
Will you help?
Your pledges are the funding that our team needs to make Pichinku a reality! With them we will build a thriving social enterprise that supports artisans and embraces sustainable practices.
What's the buzz about Pichinku yarn?
"The quality of Pichinku yarn is absolutely unparalleled. It is extremely soft and smooth, and the strands do not come untwisted easily. As a maker, these qualities are essential! I just adore the vibrant colors, and I LOVE that the dye is made with exotic, all natural materials! This is one amazing yarn you will want to always have on hand!" Lindsey, The Chesapeake Needle, MD
"The lovely teal Pichinku yarn is lovely! So soft, yummy and the perfect texture for any project." Jessica, The Hook Nook, OR
"As a knitter and environmentalist, I feel like I became part of a unique journey when I received this yarn. The beautiful, rich colors are absolutely something to be inspired by. Pichinku sets itself apart from the rest with its environmentally friendly and sustainable practices. I cannot wait to see how this new addition to the maker community continues to blossom!" Ali, Ford Explorer Knits, IL
"Pichinku yarn is incredibly soft, with beautifully subtle color variations. I believe it is important, now more than ever, to make environmentally friendly purchases when possible. Pichinku makes yarn that you will enjoy working with and feel good about purchasing!" Destiny, Knifty Knittings, IA
"I am ecstatic to have discovered Pichinku's stunning yarns! The colors are so vivid and unique, different from anything currently on the market. The yarn quality is impeccable and truly one of the softest fibers that I have ever worked with. I can't wait to get my hands on more!" Natalie, Creekside Crochet, PA
We've kept it basic, focusing only on those 3 components that will make Pichinku an immediate success: talented people, top notch materials and outstanding design.
Mapping it out:
Immediately after Kickstarter, we'll be working hard, collecting materials, setting up production and firing away with boiling dye pots and piles upon piles of yarn!
Who am I?
My name is Dana and I'm deeply passionate about preserving artisan crafts. My journey has taken me from the depths of the Brazilian Amazon to 15,000 feet in the breathtaking Peruvian Andes.
I've worked hand-in-hand with artisans in pouring rain and freezing cold to make them market ready. Without sales, their crafts won't survive and their livelihood is threatened. Plain and simple, poverty doesn't leave time for hobbies.
I was challenged to take what was already being made and re-imagine the possibilities. And from that, Pichinku was born!
Working with a powerhouse team of creative masterminds - including Diego del Rio at INTU (photography and video), Daniela Gygax (graphic design), Ivy Thompson of Visantine Collective (creative direction), and 3 inspiringly talented women artisans - making the world a little more beautiful is just one Kickstarter away!

Risks and challenges
Pichinku works with totally non-mechanized, by hand processes and we recognize our own humanity in that. The principal challenges we may encounter are:
Production delay: if for any reason we are delayed in our production schedule, you will be the first to know, whether post-Kickstarter or in the future. Our first priorities are our backers and future customers. We commit to providing the most efficient and detailed communication possible!
"Repeat" colors: part of the beauty of natural dyes is that no two batches are the same i.e. mustard yellow dyed in June may be just a little different in October, because of changes in climate and materials. We are also committed to excellent communication when dyeing, to make sure that we 100% understand expectations for each order. That said, we have years of working with these materials and are able to achieve very good color consistency!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
