Hot Yoga? No Problem!
Almost 2 years ago, we introduced you to the Gurus Sandal. Thanks to your support, we were able to build a better flip-flop from sustainable materials, introduce countless shoppers to Indian culture and plant thousands of trees! Our sandals are now available in dozens of colors, can be found in over 50 stores worldwide and have received amazing ratings and reviews.
Since launching our sandals, we have had a yoga mat on our minds. We have been through several prototypes, glues and materials. The Gurus Roots Mat is a beautiful dual-sided, sustainable cork and natural rubber mat. It is the only yoga mat you'll ever need.
We are beginner yogis at best, so we assembled a team of experienced instructors to test our prototype, which passed with flying colors.
The Only Yoga Mat You'll Ever Need
Roots is the first cork mat truly designed to be used on both sides:
- Water-resistant naturally waterproof and antimicrobial and antifungal cork won't slip even when drenched
- Natural open-cell, dual-use natural rubber bottom partially sourced from our family rubber farms in Kerala, India
- Like we do with our sandals, we plant a tree when you buy a mat
- Printed with Gurus logo and tag line: Don't Forget Your Roots
- Available in 72 inches (~5 lb.) or 85 inches (~6 lb.) long and an extra wide 25 inches
- Little Gurus Kids Mat is 60 inches long and 24 inches wide (~4lb.)
What is so great about cork?
For those of you who haven't used a cork mat, the days of using a towel during hot yoga are over. Cork actually becomes grippier when it is wet and is impermeable to water. If you don't believe us take a look at Genevieve and Melissa practicing on our mat after pouring a bucket of water on it. Please don't try this on any other mat.
We care about sustainability
We started Gurus to create awesome products, but also to give back. We are focused on creating a completely sustainable product. Both natural cork and natural rubber are harvested by hand from trees through a harmless process.

In addition to using the most natural ingredients, we make sure to not use any harsh chemicals or toxins in our mats. Even our packaging is eco-friendly and uses recycled inputs and less resource dependent materials like jute and hemp.
The Good Stuff: Rewards
Our goal with this Kickstarter project is to make a high quality cork yoga mat accessible to everyone. Mats start out at $70 for a limited quantity and for our Kickstarter, every mat will come with a jute yoga bag! Note shipping on mats is $5 for US and $25 for Canada. Shipping is now open to all other countries for $40, so please let us know if you need us to add any locations!
For every reward tier, we will plant a tree for you and invite you to our launch party in NYC, Florida or maybe both! After that, we have some shirts, yoga mat bags and of course Roots mats. Check them out here, and alongside the campaign to the right.
We are the team that brought you Gurus sandals. Joe and Prem met while working in NYC and later found out that their families grew up on the same street almost 7,500 miles away in Kerala, India! Gurus was named a Tampa Chamber of Commerce Startup Scholar and Young Businesspersons of the Year by the Indo-US Chamber of Commerce in Florida.

Risks and challenges
We have spent over a year searching for the right manufacturing and design partners, and we will continue to perform diligence and ensure that our supply chain is reliable and productive. Our manufacturing partner has now been working with us for almost two years in enhancing our prototype, and that firm works with well-known and reputable brands that are sold throughout the World. We have agreed to an initial production run, but if our Kickstarter is wildly successful, we may need to delay some shipments due to manufacturing constraints. With the experience from our first product, we have been able to predict and plan for many known issues that could arise during the manufacturing, shipping and fulfillment process. We love Kickstarter and together we have personally backed over 70 projects, so we still know that unexpected issues may arise and will always keep you informed throughout the manufacturing process of Roots.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
