My name is Katherine Gammon.
I am a 3rd year photography student at the Manchester School of Art (Manchester Met University).
I have been a member of the kickstarter community since 2013 and have successfully funded 13 projects since then.
This is my first kickstarter project where I am asking for your help with funding.
This is for my Final Major project that I have called the Ambassadors' New Clothes.
For this I am taking classic paintings and other art from the past and recreating them and re-imagining them for the 21st century. I am updating them to also make comments about the political and cultural environment we find ourselves at in 2017.
So far I have re-imagined works by Andy Warhol, Roy Liechtenstein, Francis Bacon, Hans Baldung Grien, Evelyn de Morgan and Viktor Korestsky .
The project will continue with the planned re-imagining of paintings by Boticelli, Whistler and Velasquez and several more still to be finalised. My work so far has been inevitably dominated by US politics and Donald Trump's presidency, but I intend to expand the rest of the series to consider other significant issues.
Then project will culminate in the final piece being a life size recreation of Hans Holbein's the Ambassadors, re-imagined for 2017.
Like the original, my version will be full of references and symbolism to the troubled times we live in, some obvious and some hidden. The final piece will be displayed at an exhibition at the Hoxton Gallery in London in July.
I will also be producing a booklet to accompany the project. This will give some background to the project with an explanation of the allegories contained in the Ambassadors recreation, plus a behind the scenes look as to how it was created. The booklet will also display a selection of other images from the series.
So far this project has been amazing to do, while not only challenging my technical and craft skills but also my own views on the world today. I am super excited to take this further.
The project is planned and will proceed regardless of any kickstarter funds as I am investing my own money. However, your donation would help me make this project even bigger and better, rather than cutting the corners to stay within my own budget.
I'm not looking to get anything back from this kickstarter. Every penny raised will go towards this project making it even better than I could afford myself. This includes allowing me to print the final piece at a life size scale, the same size as the Ambassadors by Holbein, and at better quality than I can currently afford. I also plan to increase the number of pages in the accompanying booklet so that I can include every recreation from my series, and make that higher quality too.
These are just some of the many ways I could improve this project and any funding to help will be greatly appreciated. I have a variety of rewards at different amounts in which I hope there is one that you like.
You can check out my website at http://theambassadorsnewclothes.co.uk/ for more information on the project.
Thank you for taking the time to look at my kickstarter and I hope you feel able to support me to achieve my goal.
Risks and challenges
The risks are very low. This is my final year project for my degree so it has to be completed for me to graduate. I have self funded the project and have enough to complete it, just not to the standard I would like.
I have costed out all the rewards and made time in my schedule to produce them
So I can 100% guarantee the project will go ahead and that all rewards will be honoured.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
