The project will ultimately consist of 25 randomly placed sculptures of Climbers on the support columns of the Metrorail. Each Climber is welded in stainless steel, powder-coated in various colors, and installed permanently.
My Project “Climbers over Miami” has only one purpose, giving people something to smile about. It’s a public installation that, by its nature, will draw your eyes to the mysterious climbers. Are they real? Should I have taken the train this Climber is heading to?
There are hundreds of columns supporting the Metrorail all over Miami, grey and sad looking. Right now the elevated tracks are 22.4 miles long, with a new extension to the airport coming in 2012. Should my project take off, other artists should follow and pick their own columns to be artistically enhanced.
I'm fascinated by the human body -- the classic theme of artistic expression and struggle. My sculptures capture the human body in motion -- a freeze frame of classic, timeless gestures and emotions. The sculptures are both ethereal and concrete. The forms I create are how one imagines a Nureyev or Baryshnikov would look in mid-flight.
I use hollow, stainless steel squares to sculpt the human form; creating works that elicit both the strength and delicacy of the body. Each square represents the trials and tribulations of life. Each of the four corners represents the intellectual, emotional, physical, and spiritual dimension of human beings. They are the framework of the spirit and the image of the body.
The hollow squares strip away distractions, leaving a powerful vision and exploration of the human body, adding an element of mystery and abstraction.
This technique adds a spiritual dimension to the human shapes and forms and gives my sculptures a universal quality.
With all of my sculptures, there is a secondary layer of beauty, abstraction, and mystery. When darkness falls and the lights come on, the exquisite shadows of form, squares, body, and spirit cast themselves upon the walls creating a second sculpture of light and shadow.
WHERE THE MONEY GOES:
Every dollar raised here goes directly into covering the cost of the sculptures and the permitting process. The first $3500 will cover the first Climber and every $2500 thereafter will get another Climber installed.
$63,500.00 will fund the entire project of 25 Climbers.SUPPORT THE PROJECT:
If you help fund the project, take a look at the rewards section to see what we can give back. Even if you aren’t able to contribute, I encourage you to leave your comments and feedback about the project. Please spread the word online through sites like Facebook and Twitter or any blogs you like.
