Ever since the beginning of time, one thing has been certain... babies!
Bump to Baby was created in honour of an important part of life. The part where a lot of my friends started growing baby bumps so I created a unique gift. Part journal, part art.
Over 12 months I painted LIFE SIZED gouache illustrations of fruit and vegetables cross sections. Each artwork represents the size of a baby at each week of pregnancy from week 7 (Blueberry) to 40 (Pumpkin). With your support they will be transformed into a set of beautifully designed cards. The cards are intended to work in several ways:
- As a fun pregnancy countdown
- As a way to record thoughts and feelings during the pregnancy journey (either while pregnant or the journey after the baby is born)
- As artworks to brighten the nursery (or any) wall
- As a gift to share with your baby once they have grown
- And the reason I created it, a fantastic baby shower/welcoming gift
Specifically, the deck will consist of 35 x A5 (210mm x 148mm or 8.3" x 5.8" - half an A4 page) unique cards. Designed and printed in Australia and supporting local business :)
The journal part of the cards is designed to be flexible. The space is open allowing you to be as creative as you like in your interpretations of the prompts. As the weeks go by the prompts will change and allow you to consider different aspects of your pregnancy and future with baby.
I have also kept in mind that you may wish to collect memories during the weeks after baby is born, so I have ensured the prompts can be used for either purpose. This means that it is the perfect gift for yourself or other expecting parents as they can keep track of memories before or after pregnancy.
As I create the cards I would love for you to be involved in the process :) Feel free to give ideas in the comments!
My friend had a surprise, a "we must meet in person" surprise. Really, at my age, when one of my friends says they have a surprise, it's usually marriage or babies. So when we met up that day, I had my bet on babies. I will always remember the thing she said that day, "my baby is the size of a lemon".
For a minute I was baffled, a lemon?
And then I thought that fruits are the perfect way of comparing the growth of a fetus as plants start from seed too. It was then I decided I would create the perfect personalised gift for my friend, the expecting mum of a lemon sized fetus, and any friend that was to give birth from this day forward.
After I discovered this fruit and vegetable baby phenomenon I started the journey to create. I took time to research the accuracy of the growing size of the fetus and the fruits and vegetables comparisons. At one stage I even took a tape measure to the supermarket! When I came up with a list I was happy with I started painting. I have painted each fruit and vegetable life sized to ensure accuracy of detail. Then I scanned each image and completed the image by drawing a digital outline of a fetus on top of each artwork. Below are some previews of the card designs with more to come over the following weeks.
As the weeks progress the fruit/vegetable grows. Where possible I've included artwork life size. From week 20 the artworks are scaled to fit the card.

I will be thrilled when I complete this project. It's been something I've tinkered on for over a year and I would love to be able to finally gift it to the friend that inspired me. It's been a slow, steady journey and when funding is complete this gift can be shared with everyone. I have some crafty ideas for how to make the cards stand out even more, watch this space.
For the cost of this Kickstarter I have factored in a couple of things. Primarily the printing cost for the rewards. If we breakthrough the goal and reach the stretch goals after I finish jumping with glee, the additional funds will be used to upgrade the cards, I have a few ideas in mind.
The $12,000 will allow for an initial run of 500 sets of cards nested in a beautiful box. In order to keep costs down I am designing the series independently and have not included this in the cost of the project. Funds will also cover additional rewards, shipping and Kickstarter related fees.
At the time Bump to Baby started, baby "lemon" was 14 weeks, he is now 8 months old! Which by my rough estimate indicates this project has been a labour of love (pun intended!) for over 1 year. I am grateful for the inspiration he tickled in me.
This has been a project put together by many hours stitched together over 12 months. I am very "cherry" and since it's conception there have been more than a "pear" of babies born. I am looking forward to finally gifting these to my friends, much belatedly. I hope that you may share these artistic cards with yourself/your friends for babies to come.
Risks and challenges
How are you developing the cards?
Being a mum is a one of a kind experience, and having never experienced the process myself am consulting some qualified experts, otherwise known as "mothers", to assist with the development of the cards.
The result will be an amazing collection of thought provoking and answer enabling prompts and tidbits to entice a unique recording of ones pregnancy journey. Bump to Baby will be something you can share with your child in the years to come. Also I am keen to get feedback from you, so comment away :)
Have you designed all the cards?
I have currently completed all the artworks required and have scanned them to my computer for editing. Painting the artworks has been the most time consuming part of the project and it done *happy dance*. So I will be focusing on finalising the card designs for the cards during the span of the project. I have scheduled in time over the next 60 days to to have the cards perfect and print ready.
What about the printing process?
I have completed a similar design project in the past, Deck of Dreams - http://mindgarden.me/. I was involved in the project from design conception to production. The process in designing and printing cards in consultation with the printers will be very similar for "Bump to Baby". I will ensure that the cards are top quality by inspecting sample decks before the project is sent for the final run.
What happens if there is a delay?
The printers I have selected have a very fast turn around time. If there is a delay it would most likely be with preparing and posting out orders. Postage delays are out of my hands, however I will have several helpers assisting me with the postage and handling process.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
