About

Super Toaster X is a project which started over a year and a half ago, in January 2015. What started as a platformer to learn how to make a game eventually shifted to something more original; a RPG game to learn Japanese.

Learn by powering up your hero's offensive and defensive abilities by accurately using Japanese vocabulary cards. Using the right abilities at the right time involves thought and strategy.

While in battle, the player selects from four previously equipped offensive or defensive abilities:

While in battle, pressing "E" brings up the offensive abilities (used to damage your opponent) while pressing "Q" bring up the defensive abilities (use to reduce or avoid damage from opponents).

A: The energy bar refills over time in battle. Using an ability depletes your stored energy for variable amounts depending on the ability.

B: a list of your defensive abilities. When they light up, you have enough energy to use them.

C: a list of your offensive abilities. When they light up, you have enough energy to use them.

We've been working pretty hard to get a technical build up for you guys to try out and let us know what you think. Community input and feedback in general is more than welcome during the game's development cycle. It is also meant to serve a foundation of the game and demonstrate the seriousness of the project.

Make sure to read the control document included in the archive. The game supports X BOX controllers.

Successfully using vocabulary cards will eventually provide skill points which will unlock new abilities and other passive upgrades:

The actual skill points (represented by stars) can then be spent in the skill tree (the current image is not yet complete, there will be more than those just displayed here):

...and a short descrition of the actual power-ups at the moment (incomplete):

Another important aspect of the game is card crafting (or forging in the game).

The objective is to combine cards that have been mastered in order to create new vocabulary cards to further expand your arsenal.

Notice how the card power goes up when you combine cards together.

Pixel Art was the logical choice mostly because we believe pixel art ages better and in the end provides better aesthetics than 3D for a game for the scope we are going for. Examples of the art are provided throughout this presentation as well as into the trailer.

 And some other art:

More art will be revealed through updates during the Kickstarter.

Music is composed by Tony Mandredonia, here's a sample of his compositions:

Achievements in Super Toaster X are not only for show. They are also rewarded in game with skill points and other perks. Some examples of the badges:

Higher pledges include the rewards in their lower counterparts.

For the first week of the KickStarter, pledging 10$ will grant you the 15$ tier. The Early Bird will last from the beginning of the campaign up to Wednesday October 19th, 23:59 Eastern Time Zone.

This nets you pretty much like the sign says: thanks... and an exclusive mp3 track for the game. Thanks! Every dollar counts!

This gets you the game when it's completed. Your name is listed in the credits of the game as well, become part of history!

The full soundtrack of the game by a professional composer.

This pledge allows you to participate actively in the development of the game by playing the various development (alpha) builds.

Select 5 English words you'd like to learn and they will find their way into the game as vocabulary cards.

A t-shirt displaying Pan in all his pixel art glory. A must have fashion accessory.

By using a photography for reference, your portrait is drawn and put into the game.

Here's an incomplete screenshot of what is intended:

A postcard displaying Pan doing an action of your choice. If you have no idea, a default image will be sent to you.

This one is limited for practical reason. We try to give as much leeway as possible for creativity but we ultimately have a say in the actual design (just to make sure it remains a minimally coherent with the universe as well of good taste).

Limited to 10.

Design one of the abilities for the game, it can either be an offensive or defensive ability. You also provide input as to the role of the ability is.

Limited to 5.

Design one of the bosses of the game.

Limited to 5.

Show up during out weekly meetings (or just come in when you're available) as we talk on Skype about the game and its development.

Limited to 1.

As a potential backer it makes perfect sense to want to know how your investment is going to used. Here's a redistribution of the funds for the game:

To do list:

Music and Sound Effects:

a) Finish up for the missing SFX.

We'll try to stick to royalty free SFXs to keep the costs down as much as possible.

b) Compose more songs for the game.

There are currently three songs composed for the game. The budget would principally for funding more original compositions.

Programming:

The main priority is the programming. Funding in this aspect of the game is very important for a competent, reliable programmer.

a) Currency System

b) Skill tree system

c) Kanji supported vocabulary system

d) Dungeon generator system

e) Achievement system

Art:

Being the main developer and artist for the game, this aspect of the game is the one I have the most control upon. Most of the foes are already finished save a few animations here and there and the UI is pretty much complete.

a) Environment

What needs the most work is creating the actual dungeon environment. Creating background if you will and animations for background elements to have as much variety as possible.

b) Bosses

A lot of time will need to be invested in drawing and animating the bosses for the game. One is already done and finished but all of the other bosses still need to be designed and completed.

c) Abilities

Although quite a few abilities are already drawn, there's still a long way to go in this aspect of the game.

Those are the three main priorities.

Taxes:

The Canadian Government taxes income of its citizens like most other countries. The amount of income tax depends on each Canadians revenue.

For more information about taxes in Canada, please visit the Canadian Government official website on the matter:

Jeff Mann is the programmer for Super Toaster X. In his free time, he enjoys playing with math and physics, baking and building massive, over-complicated space planes on Kerbal Space Program.

It wouldn’t be an unfair statement to say that a few bad apples on KickStarter with questionable/non-existent ethics have poisoned the well and made it harder for honest developers to get their campaign funded.

The ethical cornerstones of Super Toaster X are transparency and communication. This is why there will be devlogs every three weeks post KickStarter  to inform the backers about the project development and let them know what has been going on so that no one is left in the dark for an extended period of time. Those will take place on Monday evening every two weeks. A section of the devlog will be dedicated to answering questions asked during the last two weeks as well in order to remain as upfront about the project as possible.

Updates during the kickstarter will take place every three days from launching day providing more information about music, art and programming. The updates will also contain a question and answer section to comment on people's feedback about the game.

Updates are meant to be opportunities for potential backers to ask questions and voice their concerns and other inquiries. We'll do our best to answer them in a transparent, instructive fashion.

Updates post-kickstarter will take place once every three weeks.

1. Isn't this a ripoff of this or that game?

Super Toaster X is originally based on previous personal project called "Slimongo". The original concept of Slimongo was adapted to Super Toaster X later on.

You can check out the game that inspired this game here:

https://rpgmaker.net/games/2990/

2. I've played this game before and it was a platformer, what happened?

The game was originally a project  to learn how to make a game with Game Maker. It eventually became obvious that the independent game scene was already saturated with platformer. Slimongo had always been a unique and motivating project to work on so Super Toaster X was reoriented towards an educational RPG.

3. Wasn't this called "Super Toaster Guy" at some point?

It was. Aaron Hazouri was already the owner of "The Strange Adventures of Toaster Guy" and following a private conversation, it was agreed to change the title to Super Toaster X. "X" was meant to be changed later on but since people liked it it stayed and "Super Toaster X" became the final title for the game.

Risks and challenges

A lot of the graphics assets for the game are already done and a good part of the music as well although they haven't been programmed into the game yet. Therefore, the biggest risk will be to find a programmer with good skills who can program what is left to include into the game: the currency system, the crafting system and the skill tree.

The objective is to keep the first game reasonably concise in scope so that it gets completed and doesn't fall into the trap of going for unrealistic objectives.

Another challenge will be to make sure to remain within budget programming wise. If we ever go over, I'll be using the resources for art and do them on my own free time.
