ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
The 2nd Annual Dia de los Muertos PHX Festival is an interactive, multi-generational, and participatory cultural immersion event blending traditional Mexican experiences with a twist of Southwestern flavor. The festival is presented by Cultural Coalition, a nonprofit arts organization whose board members founded the original Dia de los Muertos in Arizona 33 years ago. Dia de los Muertos PHX takes disappearing folk traditions and reinterprets them, creating new and innovative ways to address important social issues such as accepting death while celebrating life, and encourages collaborations between local government, businesses and community artists.
We are planning a festival that is unique, and distinguished from the other celebrations in our state. Through innovative performances, children’s art activities, an artist Mercado, and a traditional Candlelight Procession at sunset, we create an experience that instills a sense of history, pride and knowledge about our multicultural roots and Indo-Latino culture to the community at large. We are here on kickstarter to ask for your help to continue this tradition in Downtown Phoenix!
This will be the 2nd edition of the festival in Downtown Phoenix. We have received funding from the Arizona Commission on the Arts and the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture to continue with the festival. This funding will cover the performing artists' fees, but we are required to match this with private funding. This is where you come in. We need to raise $6,000 dollars which will go towards covering:
- Park fees
- Professional Sound System
- Other operational costs
Cultural Coalition artists have been creating programming and activities for Dia de los Muertos in the Valley for over three decades. As artists, this is not simply an observation of a tradition, but an artistic reinterpretation that keeps the celebration culturally relevant to our community. Our creative modern adaptations of ancient customs such as La Mascarada, The Flight of Quetzalcoatl, and La Llorona, promote our cultural heritage while preserving our traditions.
Kickstarter is a great way for the community to get involved in helping us keep our culture and traditions alive. Culture belongs to all of us, and it is important that we share it. By backing this project, you will help us make sure that this cultural event remains free and open to all those who wish to participate.
IT’S ALL OR NOTHING
No donation is too small—every single dollar counts! The way Kickstarter works is that our project will only be funded if our entire goal is met. If we fall even a dollar short we get ZERO (and your credit card will not be charged). It’s all or nothing, so if you would like to see the Dia de los Muertos PHX Festival thrive in Phoenix, invest in your community and back this project! An added benefit is that your contribution is tax-deductible.
OTHER WAYS YOU CAN HELP
Your contribution to the project is essential, but there are also other important ways to support this project:

Spreading the word is vital, so please share this link with your friends and family through the social media site of your choice. And most important of all, we hope you and your family will join us at Margaret T. Hance Park on October 27th for the 2nd Annual Dia de los Muertos PHX Festival!
Risks and challenges
Our greatest risk is not raising enough money to cover the park fees and other operational expenses, but we are putting our faith in the community to help keep this tradition going for future generations. All children deserve to know and to experience this beautiful ancient tradition to remember our beloved departed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
