About

Cold brew coffee, it's actually easy to make at home

Our mission was to create the best cold brew coffee filter on the planet. It's affordable, beautiful and simple. Most importantly, it makes delicious coffee! Whether you're new to cold brew or an old hat, we think you'll love Rumble Jar.

Cold brew is so hot right now, because it tastes good

Coffee aficionados...you already know this stuff. But for the newbies out there...the reason cold brew has become so popular is because a lot of folks find it just plain-old tastes better. The secret is that cold water extracts ~70% less acid from the coffee grounds than hot water, which means that your coffee ends up tasting a lot less bitter. #science

So if you're new to cold brew, get ready to enjoy a smoother, sweeter flavor of coffee. We have a Q&A section at the bottom of our page if you'd like to learn a little more about cold brew.

NEW! Stretch goal #2: GFB bar included at $40K level

It's time for a new stretch goal! We already unlocked a new cap color option (Kickstarter Green, see below) as part of our first stretch goal for reaching $30K. Now we're setting our sights on a new stretch goal: if we reach the $40K level, we'll be covering your first breakfast by including a GFB Gluten Free Bar with every Rumble Jar you back. Backed our Double Pack tier? In that case, you'll be getting 2 GFB bars. (FYI, we can only do this stretch goal for US backers, see below for more info)

Not a gluten free eater? Well neither are we, but we still eat these bars because they’re delicious and made of high quality ingredients. And obviously, the bars taste even better when paired with your own delicious Rumble Jar cold brew. So basically, your entire first breakfast is covered!

Stretch goal #2: breakfast is on us! GFB has 6 flavors, and it's your choice.

(International backers - our apologies for not being able to include this extra for you! Sending food or coffee abroad is difficult, so we need to just focus on making sure you get your Rumble Jars because that's our priority. We absolutely promise that our next stretch goal #3 will be one you can enjoy too.)

Four hardware components, that's all you need

We'll let you in on a secret. Cold brew is dead simple to make. The formula is: coffee grounds + water + time. That's it. No need to even heat the water! So an at-home brewing system should be dead simple too. The necessary equipment is just these 4 high-quality components.

Step 1: Load and lock the filter

Pour coffee (coarse grounds are preferable) into the stainless steel filter and secure the silicone cap.

Step 2: Get your rumble on

Put the filter into the jar, fill the jar with water and tighten the lid. Now the fun part: give it two quick shakes. You know you've done it right when you hear the rumble of the swooshing water (yep, that's where our weird name comes from...apparently "swoosh" was already taken). The rumble process is technically known as agitation. And it is absolutely required to properly extract coffee from the beans. Don't believe us? Just try a batch without agitating it and...enjoy your tea!

Step 3: Get some sleep, you've earned it

Cats. Because it's the internet.

Step 4: Quick clean-up

Pull the filter out, dump the grounds, give it a quick rinse. Clean-up is done!

Step 5: Get Brewsy

Enjoy it straight from the Mason jar!

Simple, yes, but also a really smart design

Keeping it simple means designing as smartly as possible. Here was our goal:

TOTAL PREP + CLEANUP TIME = 1 MINUTE

Having fewer pieces means less stuff to prepare and less stuff to clean, so we began by figuring out what gear we could eliminate.

The Filter, stainless steel

Our filter can make either drinkable cold brew or 1-to-1 concentrate (i.e. 64 ounces). We placed notches to guide the amount of grounds to use for each.

Rewards, let's talk about them

Every Rumble Jar comes with:

  • a stainless steel filter
  • a standard, 32-ounce wide-mouth Mason jar with lid
  • your choice of cap color: dark black or orangey-red (yes, official names); and because we achieved our $30K stretch goal, you now have a third color to choose from: Kickstarter Green (see rendering below)
  • a starter pack of Jittery John's coarse-ground coffee (deets below, US & Canada only)

So if you get 2 Rumble Jars, you get 2 of all that stuff above.

Our coffee partner, Jittery John's

Jittery John's only does cold brew coffee. That's it. So when we were beginning to think through our filter idea, we reached out to them first. In addition to being super nice people with a great mission, these folks are serious cold brew experts. Their advice was invaluable in helping shape the development of the Rumble Jar. Their #1 piece of advice: use coarse grounds!

So, we're taking that advice a step further by including a starter pack of their delicious Colombian beans for every backer...coarse grounds, of course! We just wanted to make sure your first batch of cold brew would be delicious. Big thanks to them for helping us with the Rumble Jar!

(note: unfortunately we can only include the coffee for shipments heading to the US and Canada)

More about cold brew, Q&A-style

If it's so easy to make, why do stores charge a buck or two more for it than hot coffee? We have no idea.

But what if I like my coffee hot? We'll let you in on another top-secret umm...secret. You can indeed make cold brew and then heat it up. It won't suddenly turn bitter and lose its sweeter flavor. That's because the acidic compounds reside in the coffee grounds, so once they're removed, you can prepare your coffee any way you like. So go heat it up and add whatever else you normally would to your hot coffee. Our bet is you'll find yourself needing less sweetener than you did before.

Is there anything else cool about cold brew? Yep, it can be stored for a week or two. That's part of the reason we designed our filter to work in tandem with the world's best storage container: the Mason jar. Those time-tested, leakproof, airtight seals will keep your coffee fresh for a while.

Isn't iced coffee the same thing as cold brew? Nope. Iced coffee generally refers to a standard drip hot brew which is then poured over ice to cool it down. Since the coffee is originally brewed with hot water instead of cold, it's more acidic and tends to have a more bitter taste.

Can you tell me more, tell me more? The folks at Bon Appetit wrote an even better cold brew Q&A than we did.

Our team, twin coffee fans who like making stuff

Karl on left, Hans on right. Same serious-face pouring technique...see, told you we were twins!
Karl on left, Hans on right. Same serious-face pouring technique...see, told you we were twins!

Coffee...we drink a lot of it. That was our "coffee expertise", at least until a year ago when Karl got fed up with all of the existing filters out there and started hacking away on some new ideas he came up with to make a better one for cold brew. Hans remained skeptical. But Karl converted Hans to cold brew through a combination of sorcery and brainwashing (i.e. having him taste it) until Hans capitulated and saw the light...cold brew was better!

Both of us are product designers and creators, and while we're pretty good at developing concepts, we're even better at finding folks who have real expertise to make our ideas come to life. We hunted around and linked up with the perfect manufacturing shop that strictly works on coffee devices, and off we went to designing, prototyping and playing with our different ideas. These guys had seen and made it all, so when they said, "Wow this is a really good idea," we knew we were onto something! (or they just say that to everybody)

Oh, another thing about us is that we're also good at Kickstarter! Not in the "we raised a bajillion dollars" sense, but in the sense that we take insane pride in trying to deliver on the promises of our projects. So our track record has been really good: in 5 projects over 6 years, we've delivered the rewards for all 5 of our campaigns either on-time or with only a one-month delay. That's 5 projects with lots of reward tiers, and the worst we've done is been a month late on a couple of them. Any Kickstarter Superbackers could tell you how rare that is.

And so Rumble Jar will be our 6th campaign together. You might notice we're running it under Karl's newbie account (so our page says "First Created" at the top). We've done that because cold brew coffee is a wee bit unrelated to bear coats and retro ski gloves and we wanted to keep it that way.

One more cool thing about us: Hans is working on this campaign as a Kickstarter Creator-in-Residence. The program is great. The people are better. And it means you work out of their office, which is THE BEST! See that nice kitchen above? Yeah, unfortunately not Hans' apartment, but fortunately his temporary office. So if you're a creator too, take a look at Kickstarter's residency program. [end plug]

Timeline & production plan

It's probably helpful if we let you know where we stand production-wise. We've completed all rounds of mold-building, prototyping, designing and testing. And since September, both of us have actually been brewing cold brew on a daily basis out of our final pre-production prototypes. And we are super impressed with how well they're holding up. With that in mind, here's THE production plan:

  • November: run Kickstarter campaign
  • December: collect backers' cap color preferences, place order with manufacturer to begin filter and cap production
  • January: design and order packaging
  • February: place bulk Mason jar and coffee sample order
  • March: filters and caps delivered, coffee delivered, assemble rewards, ship to backers
  • April: buffer (for unforeseen problems)
patent pending

Shoutouts

  • Kickstarter for letting Hans crash their office for a few months. Carol, Stephanie, John, Lindsay and all the other kindhearted souls and co-residents and Slack groups (and dogs!).
  • Jittery John's for showing us the ropes and giving amazing advice when we were starting out.
  • Damon for filming and editing the video. You are seriously talented.
  • Jake and the Fellow team for always being there to answer all our technical newbie questions!
  • Chris for the last-minute graphic design help. Thanks for picking up the phone while you were on top of a mountain! S+downarrow next.
  • Tomasz for the amazing photos of Hans in the kitchen.
  • Bowdy for that amazing voice and tunes.
  • Kendra and Christina for being so accepting and loving.

Risks and challenges

We're new to the coffee world, so we will inevitably be learning along the way as unexpected problems arise. But we do have a lot of experience producing physical goods. We've set up our own production lines in the US, and we've also worked with contract manufacturers abroad. This project will require a little of both (imported and US components, with some later-stage assembly in the US). That doesn't mean we have all the answers, but we're great at troubleshooting and highly motivated to keep our backers happy! Our track record reflects that commitment. And since it is Kickstarter, we'll be totally open with our backers and will share with you any issues as they arise. Hopefully you'll feel like you're a part of our journey (both the good and the bad!).

Given that this is a physical good, we're subject to all the typical problems associated with the manufacturing and shipping process. We have a lot of experience manufacturing/delivering physical goods, but the risk always remains of something unexpected happening and things getting delayed. We've worked through defects, sourcing mishaps, customs delays and port strikes just with our Kickstarter projects alone, but we're generally very good about building buffers into our timelines for unexpected delays (check out the month of April in our timeline above), and that's how we still manage to deliver on-time and as-promised. Fingers crossed! <3
