This is a three-tiered campaign that we will refer to as…
Donnie and Breezy have been seriously backlogged and need to clean out the pipeline! We have 5-7 songs MOSTLY recorded that are ready to push out for as the next BSM EP. We ALSO recorded what we think is a kick ass cover of M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” that has been getting a great response from fans and music business folks alike. It’s given us a couple ideas: Shoot a video to up our profile AND record some other unlikely covers for a covers EP (in addition to our album of originals) that we can service to music supervisors and keep our movie/tv mojo grooving.
Bree & Donnie D, yours truly in Beautiful Small Machines, are getting ready to release a bunch of new material. In fact, a few of these we have been sitting on for a bit despite worldwide demand. (thanks Phil!) Anyway, as Don has nearly finished recording his two album opus, we felt it was more than time to clean out the closets at BSM, Inc. And that we're ready to do, with hopefully, your help!
So what are we doing, and what have we done?
OBJECTIVE ONE: Finish and Release NEW BSM EP – “Jetpacks Are Yes!” (tentative title, pending possible litigation), promotion
We have a handful of songs that did not make the Robots Ep that are yelling at us to be released. These songs have only been played live and are finally ready to make their recording debut. You may know some of them as “The DJ Stayed Home”, “EastSide” and “The Wretched Sound of City Cars”. We also have another 3 or 4 tunes that no one has heard yet and they are also yelling at us. We are looking to finish this collection, and release the next BSM EP. Recording and mixing for this will begin in December out in LA, at Velvet Elk West…obviously. Expect all the trimmings of the BSM brand – unexpected instrumentation (Donnie), twisty lyrics (Bree) and undeniable hooks (Music Faeries). Additional costs post recording will go towards marketing and manufacturing.
Estimated total for Objective One: $5000
OBJECTIVE TWO: Shoot Paper Planes Video
A little while back, for fun, we recorded a sort of twang-strum version of MIA's "Paper Planes." It came out of a rehearsal thing where we just went in a different direction for the iconic song. But, thing is, we loved it. And thing is, people seemed to really dig our version. So we recorded it. And yep, thing is, people (to be named later) rejoiced over this recording. So it prompted us to get this out there, and we went into video think tank mode. Don came up with a little one-shot (hopefully) theatre piece that we will be shooting, likely, as you read this. This is something we are very excited about, and we are recruiting all genius art amigos to help us see this through. And yes, this is a big part of this fundraiser. Still not sure why everything isn't free for BSM, but in the meantime…
We will also look to cross-market this as much as we can to get some more attention for the the rest of the BSM catalog. We have a great director, DP and choreographer in place. We still need a small production crew and a merry band of extras and dancers (yes, dancers!) Of note, we are daily trying to keep our costs down for this, in the hopes that we can stretch a little into a lot. Any savings we can muster in this regard, will go into additional small videos or promotional clips!
Estimated total for Objective Two: $7000
OBJECTIVE THREE: Record and Release BSM Covers Album, Promotion
So the recording of "Paper Planes" prompted us to consider what Don has always called "just an awful idea." You guessed it, our own covers record. Somehow, after the collective satisfaction of "Paper Planes", he changed his mind. Though, you may note, he will be the selection committee wall between you, our loyal fans, and Bree…as she keeps suggesting a litany of Phil Collins covers.
Anyway, this EP is in it's infancy, and a good deal of this budget will go towards extra musicians and studio time to record the remaining 5 or 6 songs for the project. Any good suggestions? Well, we might add too, that the highest contributer(s) to the BSM fundraiser, will get to choose one of the songs for the EP (within reason of course. be prepared to have a few choices!) Additional costs post recording will go towards marketing and manufacturing.
Estimated total for Objective Three: $5000
Our fundraising goal of $17K has been set to cover the costs of recording, manufacturing, and marketing two brand new EPs (our originals collection, and the covers album), plus the production and editing costs of one video, for our cover of MIA's "Paper Planes."
THANK YOU SOUNDS CLICHE...
But we'll say it nonetheless. There are SO SO many of you who have been extraordinarily loyal and supportive over the years to our music, and it goes without saying that we consider ourselves pretty lucky in that regard. With the state of the music business (and art business in general), this, in many ways, has become the new model for artists to get their works made and out there. On one hand, it can be very scary..art from a high-wire…but on the other, it can be very gratifying and inspiring. The idea that there are those out there waiting to hear what you're creating before you've created it…well, that can be some serious fuel for the creative soul.
So there you have it. Beautiful Small Machines are on the rise again, and we're hoping for a big presence next year, both with these BSM projects, Don's new albums (thank you Kickstarter), and Bree's bourgeoning acting debut!
We'll thank you in advance here, but more so to come, in the hopes that we have a successful campaign.
