A juried show of glass and glass-related sculpture in Seattle WA in June, 2011 concurrent with the Glass Art Society Conference.

We are putting on a juried art show called SUPERPOSITION in Seattle to exhibit some of the most innovative contemporary glass and glass-related artwork. It will be held at the Center on Contemporary Art in June, 2011 concurrent with the Glass Art Society Conference. The show’s jurors are Jack Wax, Jocelyne Prince, Jin Hongo and Michael Scheiner.

We need your help to make our show kick-ass! While the three of us, the jurors and many other volunteers are donating their time to make this project happen, we need to cover the cost of space rental, installation materials, printing for advertisements, travel and the production and print of our catalog.

Our project has come out of need. We know many amazing artists—some from glass backgrounds and some from other visual media—that make glass-related work we are excited about but has no place to be shown. We think that there is a significant audience for this work if it is given the chance to be seen. This is a chance for us to do our part to create more opportunity and exposure for the kind of work these artists are making.

By contributing to our exhibition, you are not only helping us, but you are helping to support a movement of glass and glass-related artists. Your support is not only for a single exhibition, but to help create future opportunities for many artists.

The title {SUPERPOSITION} comes from Quantum Mechanics: it is defined as “the property of a particle to occupy all of its possible states simultaneously. This property of multiple, coexisting possibilities persists until the superposition is measured, observed or interacted with.”

To us, this is a position that is occupied by many of the artists we will present in the exhibition. By producing work that has grown out of many disciplines at once, they find themselves falling between the ready definitions of existing genres. As an unknown quantity, they remain unobserved and outside the existing support structures of galleries, collectors and art instituions.

Glass, as material, process, or phenomena, lends itself to this paradox inherently. It is physically present while visually absent. It can be simultaneously liquid and solid. It is both strong and fragile. By choosing a theme that the material lends itself to naturally, we are creating a space for surveying the pivotal and innovative ways this material is being used in contemporary practice, from artists with and without formal training in the material

We want to be inclusive and to encourage diversity in artistic media and practice. The shift toward plurality and multi-disciplinary work only creates more opportunity for unusual and exciting work in glass. More than anything, we simply hope to see more innovative and interesting artworks. We hope that our work here and similar projects in the future will help facilitate this growth.

This is our attempt to move forward something that is already in motion. Our hope is that this exhibition is just one of many events, not necessarily with our direct involvement, that continue to provide exposure for this community.
