About

Heya Folks!

Peopletime is a civilization management game for smart watches and smart phones. It functions as a stand-alone game, as well as a watchface on Android Wear devices and a live wallpaper on Android phones, and, depending on stretch goals being met, iPhone, iPad, and the Apple Watch.

DANGER AND FOOD
DANGER AND FOOD

The goal is to end up with a game somewhere between Dwarf Fortress and Tomodachi Life. If you haven't played those games - don't worry! The main idea is that you manage a group of settlers as they try to live their lives and grow.

Your people act purely in self-interest without your input - if one of your people is hungry he might go out and spend some time to find an apple, but this is hardly an efficient way to stay fed! A better idea would be to command some of your people to build a storage room, and fill it with food (through hunting and gathering, etc), and eventually construct a farm in order to remain sustainable. This allows others to have more time to work on other projects like fort/town building, research, crafting, and sweet dance moves.

Peopletime is based on real world time, meaning that the game world evolves even while you're not actively playing. This is where the watchface mode comes in. Imagine being able to play a civilization management game all day without being an antisocial lunatic! You simply take a glance at your watch or phone, only to find out that it's 5:32 PM and half your village is on fire. With a couple flicks you instruct a party to go gather water instead of flailing wildly, and check back in 15 minutes to gauge their progress. Your phone or watch essentially becomes a window to another world. A very strange world.

I decided to take Peopletime to Kickstarter for a several reasons. I think it's a really neat concept, and it's been fun to work on, but it has gotten to a point where I feel like it's either time to commit fully to completing the project, or to move on. If I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it properly. Obviously, the more funding I can raise, the longer I can afford to spend on the project. Depth and breadth are my primary goals here, and obviously those things are huge time sinks. If the project is funded, I'll release at the same time regardless - but I'll be able to devote more time to it beforehand, and more importantly, afterwards.

Risks and challenges

Obviously this project is complex. It's currently running on my own engine that I've built from scratch, but I know what I'm doing.

I've been working in games since I graduated from college, where I received bachelor's degrees in Digital Arts and Design, as well as Game Development. I'm currently working alongside Iron Galaxy Studios to create new unique IPs. This means I'm in the Lang Zone and can do no wrong.

The biggest concern I have personally is in regards to the first stretch goal. Obviously I want this on the Apple Watch, but I'll either need you all to make a lot of noise, or wait until Apple releases the SDK to the public, which will happen, but might take a while. Luckily, I've done multiple ports before. Using my own engine I have developed a good programming style to maintain portability, so once the SDK is available, I should be able to make quick work of the project, that is, if we even hit that stretch goal!
