HARMONIC - A film by Heather Hansen
Thank you for taking a moment to allow me to introduce Harmonic.
My name is Heather Hansen. I'm an interdisciplinary artist currently based in New Orleans. The Louisiana Art & Science Museum in Baton Rouge has honored me with an opportunity to show my work as part of Prospect 3+, the premier biennial of contemporary art in the U.S. My recent series “Emptied Gestures” - a hybrid of dance and drawing - has garnered viral attention with over 6 million views and social media shares. It has been featured on leading international design blogs such as Colossal, Juxtapoz, Fubiz, Ignant, Hi Fructose and My Modern Met.
Harmonic will be a unique, 360° full-dome film experience which will invite the viewer to the center stage to be completely surrounded by massive-scale collective kinetic drawings and music. Expanding on the technique I developed for my body of work Emptied Gestures, we are recruiting a group of professional dancers whom I've had the pleasure of working with over the past years. Together we will perform choreographed kaleidoscopic and organic patterns inspired by the orbital patterns of electrons within the six basic elements required to form life.
In a thorough exploration of the the spacial possibilities of the planetarium dome screen, and the 5.1 sound system, we want to enable the audience to be completely immersed in a meditative sound and image experience. I have been deeply inspired for Harmonic by quantum mechanics, Busby Berkely musicals, frescoed cathedral domes, and the Gutai art movement, among other sources.
Physicist and musician Christophe Jackson and I will collaborate on this project. We will seek to illustrate the harmonic function of the orbital patterns of six basic elements. Director of Photography Bryan Tarnowski has been documenting the Emptied Gestures series from the beginning and will film this in the most innovative and cinematic way. Maury Strong and Tracy Keller of Strong Films will be producing Harmonic. Cinematographer Jake Springfield of Tempt, and post genius Bob Weisz will also be key contributors.
Harmonic will premier on November 6 at the Louisiana Arts and Sciences Museum (LASM) Planetarium, as part of the international art fair, Prospect 3+. After its premier, Harmonic will then be distributed throughout other Planetarium theaters around the world.
Harmonic will be partially funded from other sources, but in order to create a project of this scale. I need your help in funding the production. I've felt an enormous amount of support over this past year. If you have ever "liked" or shared any of my work online, this is your chance to be a part of a very special project. This is an ambitious film that is going to be groundbreaking and absolutely gorgeous. I'm confident we can pull it off with a little help from our friends, admirers and colleagues!
Capturing live action film for full dome projection is a complex process that requires hiring a specialist crew, camera equipment, rigging and staging. In addition to filming requirements other essential components to complete this project include: a large sound stage with a grid and enough lighting to evenly light an 50' diameter area, a 32' round platform stage with the perimeter flagged off, equipment rental, art supplies, multiple costume changes, compensation for the crew, dancers, and production, editing, post, and promotion.
Thanks already for your time, and we'd love to take you on this journey with us.

Risks and challenges
Most of what is currently being created for dome projection is animated. Live action is sometimes shot with GoPro rigs.
We are not willing to sacrifice cinematic quality, so we are opting to use high quality cameras for capture. That is why I have assembled a solid team of both technically and creatively brilliant professionals.
Most of us have collaborative experience working together and solving just these kinds of challenges. Cumulatively we have years of professional experience on commercial projects and feature films. I have total confidence that we can overcome any obstacles along the way.... as long as you can help us overcome this first obstacle to get started.
