Why the GNARWALL?
I'm a passionate surfer that wanted an artful way to hang my boards in my design studio.
In slightly less than short:
I began surfing about 10 years ago. Believe it or not I learned on the Great Lakes, and still to this day the majority of my surfing is on Lake Ontario, Erie and Huron. Although I try to get to the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans as much as I can. The lakes only fire up from around September until March with cold winter winds. We have a lot of downtime in the summer months which is really how this all came to be. Over the years I accumulated 7 boards (which you will see throughout the campaign) Earlier in the year my Industrial Design consultancy SHEPP Industrial Design Inc. or SHEPP iD for short moved into an amazing loft studio in the Junction district of Toronto. The space boasts 16' ceilings and large windows. I situated my standing workstation on a large white cinder block wall. As soon as I saw this wall I knew I wanted to put my surfboards up on display. I took inspiration from the typical plastic 90 Degree Surfboard hanger that a lot of surf shops use to file boards. I came up with a simple straight hanger and hung my boards from 3/4" Black Pipe that I bought from Home Depot. Ta da! Done deal, boards are up on the wall, I'm stoked.
At this point the thought of commercializing this idea into an actual product had never crossed my mind. Then something happened. Every time someone came into my office, it was an immediate conversation starter, some of my clients who don't even surf wanted a hook so they could buy a surfboard to display in their house as art. Not to mention all of my surf buddies wanted hooks for their boards. That's when I decided to simplify the design and come up with an invisible mounting system. The only thing I didn't like about the initial design was the ugly black pipe. It had to go. I then realized that the hooks could be shrunk down to just a bit larger than the fin boxes. The discreet wall hanger took quite a few iterations and prototypes to come up with the perfect design. After months of trials and errors I really think we nailed the design for this system. I hope you will enjoy the simplicity as much as we do!

Why do we need your help?
Money collected through Kickstarter will be going towards our tooling, first run production costs and other business infrastructure expenses. We set our goal relatively low so that we can ensure that all backers will receive their rewards.
Risks and challenges
Supplier production is always a potential failure point for businesses. Luckily we have been working with our primary supplier for 15 years through other projects. As a result we have established a clear and consistent channel of communication that will help us avoid delays.
One major challenge that we will need to overcome is our own outgoing shipments. This will be our first product launch, so establishing shipping standards for countries around the world will take a bit of work, but its something that we have already started working on.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
