My name is Katherine Boland and I’m an Australian artist living in Melbourne. After 5 years in the writing, my memoir, Hippy Days, Arabian Nights: from life in the bush to love on the Nile is finished. And the great news is is that I’ve found a publisher who wants to publish it! Now all I need is your help with the cost of printing so I can get my incredible story into print and share it with the world.
Wild Dingo Press is a small, independent Melbourne publisher. Rather than focusing on high-profile famous authors, it is committed to giving voice to a diversity of Australians who have important stories to tell about ourselves, our land, our history, our culture – often first-time writers who enrich our lives enormously but otherwise would not have an opportunity to have their unique and inspiring stories available to all of us. Having no source of revenue other than from the books you buy, Wild Dingo Press operates on the smell of an oily rag but remains determined to get the stories out whatever it takes. The biggest expense is printing. With the help of friends and readers, Wild Dingo Press can give voice to my extraordinary story.
Back in the 70s, I caught the bug in the air at the time: the hippie counterculture dream of getting back to nature and becoming totally self-sufficient. I dropped out of art school and my boyfriend and I packed up our old EH Holden ute and hit the road, doing all sorts of jobs until we’d saved enough money to buy a hundred acres of bush on the Far South Coast of New South Wales.
Battling financial hardship, primitive living conditions, bushfires, drought and floods, we cleared the land, grew all our own fruit and veggies and built a house out of bush poles and mud. But after nearly 30 years of funny, crazy, hair-raising and sometimes tragic events and experiences, my hippy dream went up in smoke. You're going to have to read the book to find out why.
Rising from the mud and ashes, my life went on an amazing trajectory and my career as an artist took off. Suddenly, I was travelling around the world undertaking artist’s residencies, ending up in Egypt in a studio on the Nile where I fell madly in love. And that was the start of a whole new chapter of my life!
