It's finally time to finish and release this new album AND I need backers to make it happen.
Since moving to Calgary in May of 2016, I’ve played over 200 gigs, written over 50 songs and 45 poems, taught over 1000 guitar lessons, worked at the National Music Centre, travelled to Kansas City twice for international showcasing at one of the most influential folk music societies in the world, totalled a car, recovered from a major achilles injury, dealt with theft from my home/identity theft and moved just a few too many times. What a ride!
After all that, I’m getting my ducks in a row and it’s finally time to finish and release my fourth full-length album.
My new record 'Stay' will be produced by Josh Rob Gwilliam at OCL Studios, a world class recording facility just east of Calgary, most tracks with a full studio band. The album will embody the “Alberta prairie Canadiana” sound you know and love, but, unlike my previous heavy-hearted diary folk, this collection of songs grapples with acceptance, moving forward and the world’s current state of affairs. My writing/playing/singing in this album has been heavily inspired by the likes of Patty Griffin, Bonnie Raitt, Gillian Welch, Susan Tedeshi, Lydia Loveless, Maren Morris (believe it or not) and many more.
The single “Stay” was released in April 2018 to generate momentum for the full album release next year, April 2019 and will be supported by cross-Canadian and Western European tours.
Since my first record release in 2011, I’ve made so many incredible friends: amazing people I get to work and play with who help me grow as an artist a little more each day. Support comes in many different ways and it’s been amazing to feel that from so many of you already. You wonderful people have hosted me in your venues and homes, come out to my shows, supplied me with me artistic fodder, bought my music physically and digitally, provided helpful feedback … I could go on and on. I’m so grateful. Every little bit of support deepens my awareness and helps me evolve.
High quality music creation and distribution is not cheap - and something so inherently valuable shouldn’t be. But, as many of you know, it’s more difficult than ever to make money as a self-employed musician in today’s climate of streaming and over saturation. I’ve been working with Josh Gwilliam at OCL Studios for over 2 years on the recording and production of these songs but have continued to delay the full recording process because of a lack of funding. Aside from a small amount of support I received from The Calgary Arts Development Opportunity Grant program for the single “Stay”, the rest of the expenses involved with this vision came out of my shallow pockets.
I’ve taken stock of where I’m at: I’m proud of my skills and my craft; I’m dedicated and I work hard. As difficult as it is to ask for help, I’ve come to a point where I need financial backing in order to take my career to the next level and so here it is: I’d like to invite you to be directly connected to the advancement of my music career through purchasing one of the rewards in this kickstarter campaign so that I can finish and release this album! Please don't be shy, every little bit helps!
Risks and challenges
There are always risks and challenges when it comes to releasing an album into the world though my goal to pre-release this album to my backers by April 2019 is feasible. We've already recorded half of the album and now I just need the finances to finish it and pay for the musicians hired, the production, mixing, mastering and initial distribution of the album.
I am so close to having this album wrapped up! Surrounded by a community of supporters, I feel confident that we reach the finish line together.
I forsee difficulty meeting all the house concert requirements by the end of 2019 but will do my best to accommodate all my backers wishes.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
