FOR THE SECOND 5L2F MUSIC ALBUM. I've written over a dozen new songs and am using this Kickstarter campaign to raise funds so that I can record, mix, master, manufacture, and mail CDs for said new album. Your support would be used to pay for musicians and time in a professional recording studio, produce the completed album, and distribute it to you.
HERE'S HOW IT WORKS. If within 30 days we reach our goal of $10,000 then we'll complete the album. Soli Deo Gloria! In return, you'll get hard copies of the full length CD (starting at $25 pledges) and particular rewards (depending on what package you choose). If after thirty days we haven't raised enough money, the project will not be funded, and your pledges will not be taken. Soli Deo Gloria nonetheless! (however, you won't get any music or rewards)
So if you think and feel this is undertaking is worthwhile, please tell family and friends about our project, then partner with us financially to reach our goal and record a full-length album. Keep reading to find out more about the music and check out the rewards on the right.
Has the music already been written?
Yes. Since our first album came out at the end of 2014, I've been composing, notating, & practicing for this second CD. We have even been in the Recording Studio a fair bit of time doing some preliminary tracking, making sure everything is musically in order. This means that you won't have to wait years after the funding to receive your album; if fully funded we expect to have the CD in your mailbox/on your doorstep about 6 months later (that's around how long it took after the success of our first album's crowdfunding campaign). All we need is for you to preorder the music through one of our rewards (you'll find them on the right of this page).
What's the album layout?
Here's the songs that have been notated and will be recorded:
- 1) Grace & Peace (Greeting)
- 2) HalleluYah! The Avenging Judge (Revelation 19:1-3)
- 3) Your Amazing Works
- 4) Please Forgive Me
- 5) Not the Well, But the Sick
- 6) Parents' Warning (Proverbs vii)
- 7) The Trinity be Praised
- 8) Loyalty & Love
- 9) Christ you've got and Christ you'll get
- 10) Buffalo Bayou
- 11) I've Got Peace Like a River
- 12) With Praise to Thee
- 13) Old Dirk Unsheathed
Besides "I've Got Peace Like a River" (my arrangement), all the songs have original music written by myself, and I have penned all of the lyrics excepting the Scripture texts.
What's the lyrical content? What'll you sing?
The Bible says to sing a new song to the Lord, and that Christians should address one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Basically, that is what I try to do. On this album, some of the text is taken directly from Scripture (New Testament epistles' greetings, the seventh chapter of Proverbs, a piece of Revelation, a passage from Isaiah, etc.) put to music that I've composed, and many, like Your Amazing Works and Christ you've got and Christ you'll get are new songs that I've written. Hopefully that gives you an idea of what to anticipate in terms of lyrics.
What kind of music can I expect? What will it sound like?
Genre-wise it's a mixture of classical, folk, rock. Possibly the best description would be acoustic. I'm comfortable with wood & string instruments, so for this CD, piano & guitar will be the main accompaniment instruments to the singing, with other instruments (violin, cello, double bass, ukulele, egg-shakers) adding more harmony & color. My goal is to have an intimate, natural timbre, just as if we were playing in your living room, or giving you a concert from your car's passenger & back seats. I'm not at all against electronic music, but there will be little to none on this album.
Tell me more about yourself.
My name is Caleb Lee Sturgis [not to be confused with the NFL kicker :) ], 28 years old. I live with my wife and son in Katy, TX where we work, serve our local church, and make music. Through piano teaching, gigs, and composing, I support my family and develop my craft.
Before I was a Christian, at around 14 years old, I started writing music, mostly about emo-unrequited love, or infatuation. After I became a Christian, there just didn't seem to be much worth singing about besides Jesus Christ. Although I am definitely hungry and thirsty for righteousness, and probably often a poor example of a Christ follower; still, I love to sing about Him, whether with other believers, by myself, on a simple 4-minute internet video, or on a high-quality 1-hour album.
That's the summary. I am stoked about these songs, and have worked quite hard to prepare the music. So, if you'd like to see this album realized, please check and select one of the rewards on the right, and then spread the word and share the link to this page to your friends and family on social media. Your help is and will be appreciated.
FYI, the campaign closes on February 2nd (think 2/2!) Many thanks.

Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge to making an album is actually composing the music. Personally, I don't feel right raising money for a CD unless the music has already been written, and so I've done that for our finished 1st album, and have followed suit for my 2nd. The biggest challenge has already been overcome. The new songs are finished, and waiting to be recorded.
After funds have been raised, it's just work. Laying down good tracks, rehearsing & recording with the musicians, mixing, mastering, getting the artwork & formatting correct, manufacturing the CD, and finally shipping out the completed CD & rewards. Each step has its own nuanced difficulties, and it comes down to the musician's character to be diligent and work through them.
Are there risks? Yes, again, based on the musician. I think that we've already shown by our 1st album that we'll follow through once support has been raised. From the success of that album's campaign to the sending out of rewards, we took about half a year, and I plan to follow a similar timeframe for the 2nd. If you have any other questions, I'd be glad to hear from you (follow the "Contact me" link at the top of the page).
