Gato Chino, a song from A Kind of Music Tale
- WHAT IS A KIND OF MUSIC TALE
A kind of Music Tale is a 360° video documentary project based on musical experiences which will be collected in New Zealand, Indonesia, Vietnam, India, China, Iran, Greece, Morocco, South Africa, Argentina, Bolivia, Cuba, USA, France, from January 2017 to March 2018.
It’s an experimental approach which combines traditional world music with contemporary music, in a journey over 14 countries. We present a new musical experience in its emotional, psychological, artistical and anthropological contexts, by exploring different instruments or sound environments, and by featuring interviews of participants to gain their link with the music and the culture. This proposal is both questioning the musical language as a possible bridge between different cultures and the video language as a new immersive visual and sound experience in a 360° video.
This immersive experimentation develops a tale in which music is kind of like a storyteller for participants and spectators.
During an interactive performance, spectators wearing 360°glasses, will discover through visual and sound atmospheres, a virtual journey around a music world.
In order to discover a different kind of communication between people around the world, we have chosen music that could create a bridge enabling connections between different cultures. We will present a 360° video documentary in an interactive installation where the spectator will have access to his own itinerary inside the narrative and musical experimentation.
Indeed, through the five continents, the documentary will investigate and collect audio and visual fragments of personal and collective testimonies. We will share ways of practicing and feeling the music. We are looking forward to learning from the meeting with the musicians, in terms of a creative, cultural and musical exchange. In each country visited, we will propose a serie of meetings with local artists and rehearsals opened up to participants from these countries. We are excited by the opportunity to think about spaces where people meet, create, think and build together on the meaning of music as a universal language.
- WHO WE ARE
We are Maud Watel Kazak and Matias Gallipoli, a french argentinian duet of artists. We've meet in Argentina and we started to think how we could gather our competences that had to emerge in a new, creative, social, cultural and artistic challenge. Since, we dedicate all of our energy and creativity to develop A kind of Music Tale, a perfect combination between our talent, desire and effort.
Maud Watel Kazak
She is director of original intermedia works; her projects bring theater and music— along with the rapport between artist and audience— into new narrative frontiers with technology.
Founder of the Paris-based performing arts collective WatKaz, she has directed, performed in, and created a number of original inter- and trans-media theatrical works over the last several years, including two collaborative projects for the 2014 Primavera Festival at UCSB. Des Gestes Touchants was in collaboration with the electroacoustic CREATE ensemble, directed by Dr. Matthew Wright, with a musical vibrotactile (vibrational touch) bench component. La Perception Transamplithéâtrale, in collaboration with Alexis Crawshaw and Professor Marcos Novak (of MAT) included 3D-printed masks, sonic and vibrotactile music, poetry, and visual projections, all integrated with 3D tracking. One of her latest original projects— an interdisciplinary theatre, music and video work entitled Jasam Van Sebe/ Hors de Moi— was performed in numerous venues across Paris including the Théâtre de la Bastille and Théâtre de l’Opprimé. The last performative work in the Translab of UCSB included 3D technology The Dance of the Fulcrum and Kroumatograph using visual projections from a VR head-mounted display and a real-time 3D spatial virtual drawing tool.

He is a drum teacher. He works in La Efe, escuela de música, Fusion 3 and gives particular lessons. He developed a workshop of musical initiation dedicated to children, focus in the drum and the percussion.
He also develops a career of psychologist since 2013 in Buenos Aires. He worked in different institutions dedicated to persons with mental and physical pathologies, developing workshops of music therapy. He coordinates the art area in the Ba Derej institution, a day center for autistic people.
- WHAT WE NEED
We need to produce and realize film screening of A kind of Music Tale 360° video documentary: interactive and immersive experience by using 360° technologies.
We need to develop a Serie of workshops opened to musicians, artists and researchers exploring instruments and sound environments, and talk about the making of, comparative readings and reflexions around emotional, psychological, anthropological and artistical aspects developed in the documentary. How does the world around us affect the music we make?
The Camera Ricoh theta S is used to shoot 360° video takes. Very compact and easy use, it is the most appropriate to travel and record indoor and outdours. The tripod set will serve us to place or move the camera depending on the takes.
We require a complete sound equipment to obtain the best quality of recordings, that why we need different kind of microphones connected to a sound device (Zoom F8). An omnidirectional microphone to record the sound environment. A cardioid microphone to record the musical set. 1 lavalier microphone Sennheiser to realize interviews of participants.
Sound Card Roland is to amplify the sounds recordings during the process of presentation.
Oculus Rift are 360° video glasses that we will use to test the process of the live performances and also, it will be able to participants to have an immersive experience during the process. Google cardboard glasses will use for the installation/performance and let the smartphone users to enjoy the 360° video during the installation. We would like to have at least, 10 of these 360° video glasses in free access to spectators.
- OUR PARTNERS
Translab, a research facility whose mission is to investigate how technology alters the relation between actual, transactivated, and virtual space in art and science, founded and directed by Marcos Novak (architect, artist, composer, theorist and professor of Media Art Technologies, University of California, Santa Barbara), will provide us a space in the University of California, Santa Barbara to present the documentary, to experiment workshops. It provides us material supports during the residency (3D and 360° video and sound equipment).
- FIRST STEP OF A KIND OF MUSIC TALE IN ARGENTINA
We just filmed in October, 2016, in Tigre, Buenos Aires, Argentina, the first part of A kind of Music Tale documentary and realized a teaser with an Argentinian crew from Buenos Aires. We filmed with the Ricoh Theta S, the first step of this 360° music video documentary. We recorded two songs from Lucas and Pedro Bragán, “De espalda al rio” and “Gato Chino”, from the albums “Mayor and Minor” and “El Sentido”. We collaborated as musicians, Matias with percussion and Maud with piano, to propose a new version of these songs. We also realized an interview of the two musician collaborators, in which they exposed their relation and meaning to music, in term of musician, listener, composer and even teacher.
We would like to thank this wonderful crew who believe and participate in this first, new and original adventure that is A kind of Music Tale project in Argentina and also thank Filet de Merluza based in Buenos Aires who could rent us the video equipment.

Risks and challenges
We are able to work on this new 360°video technology generating a new and original artistic content that can serve to promote it, opening new opportunities around the world and making an international network.
Traveling to New Zealand, Indonesia, Vietnam, India, China, Greece, Iran, Morocco, South Africa, Argentina, Bolivia, Cuba, France, USA will reveal us unexpected and amazing meetings with artists and more generally with people, in a rich social, cultural, artistical heritage.
Language and cultural Barriers we might be able to confront.
We will discover traditional, contemporary and folk music in each country, by getting in touch with local musicians to share musical experiences and we have to build a schedule for practices and rehearsals in maximum one month per country.
As musicians, we will have to challenge, in each country, with each musician, our own practice in a new and interactive way to play and perform.
Realize a 360°video documentary for the performance with local musicians implies a strong and effective organisation during the production.
Make sure we have plenty of time for post-production, editing and testing if the 360°experience is coherent during the performance and for spectators and later for viewers on social networks.
