A Cat Lounge in Reno!
Cat Cafes and Lounges are popping up all over the country as part of a trend of ethical entrepreneurship. People are finding more socially and environmentally conscious approaches to traditional business models: Pussycat NV is coming to Reno this September, initially as a pop-up and hopefully one day as a permanent Cat Lounge.
A Cat Lounge can be many different things - at the most basic level, Pussycat NV will be a community space open to visitors that's also home to a number of adoptable cats. It can also be a place where kids who have difficulty reading can sit, relax and read to a cat. It can be a place to do yoga. It can be a place to watch Saturday morning cartoons. It can be a place to learn how to do macrame. It can be an art gallery. It can be a cozy place to chill. It can be the place you adopt the cat that you love and live with for many years.
Pussycat NV will take advantage of the incredible community we have here in Reno - of artists, educators, business owners, social workers, and many others - to offer diverse, quality programming. A key partner in this project is the Nevada Humane Society (NHS). All of the cats we'll be hosting at Pussycat NV will be rescue cats from NHS, which means they will be up for adoption. We hope to make the Cat Lounge an ideal environment for hanging out with and getting to know these cats, whether it's just a casual, one-time playdate or a meeting that leads to a lifetime together.
Our primary goal with Pussycat NV is to create a space that is welcoming and accessible to all, as well as fun and comfortable. That's where you can really help. We are asking for donations to help with three important elements:
1) Build-out: Pussycat NV will host cats and people, events and workshops, hang-outs and work. The design and construction of the space must be conducive to this wide range of activity - we'd love to do it as professionally as possible, and doing things well costs money!
2) Programming: Pussycat NV is partnering with community members who are experts in their field or craft to offer high quality programming. Since accessibility is a priority for us, it is vital that all the programming we offer will be affordable. Your donations will be a huge help towards ensuring Pussycat NV can reach a wide and diverse audience with no one turned away for lack of funds.
3) Viability: Pussycat NV is a non-profit, volunteer-run project. Whereas many Cat Cafes sell food and drinks and charge admission to visit cats as ways to offset costs, our goal is to create an open, inviting space that will be free and open to the public with no expectation of purchasing anything - just come and hang with the cats! Donating will help make this possible.
Pussycat NV is a bit of an experiment, hence the pop-up model. Part of our reasoning for doing a Kickstarter is to get a sense for what kind of support a permanent Cat Lounge would have in Reno. Seeing as this first installation will be temporary, we are not asking for a huge sum of money. That being said, every dollar you donate will potentially be part of the foundation for a permanent home for Pussycat NV.
Thanks so much for your support, and we'll see you in September!
Risks and challenges
The pop-up model is inherently low-risk. Pussycat NV will only be open to the public for 8 days in this first incarnation and we are extremely grateful to the Holland Project for providing us with the space so that we have $0 rental overhead. However, there are a number of unpredictable components to this project. We will be hosting several cats in the facility full-time for the duration of the pop-up - in the event of any health issue, cats will be immediately returned for treatment to the Nevada Humane Society.
We are confident Pussycat NV will be an exciting and popular destination - it is, after all, Reno's first Cat Lounge - but, like any new business, we won't really know how the community will respond until the day we open. We hope that you, as a donor, share our enthusiasm and trust us to do the work necessary - building out the space, marketing the project widely and effectively, curating a unique series of events and workshops - to make Pussycat NV a smash hit.
Once the pop-up is over, we will thoroughly critique our progress, assessing strong points and shortcomings, in order to determine the next step for Pussycat NV, whether it's another pop-up or a permanent Cat Lounge. We will keep meticulous records of the budget to prepare us for future work on Pussycat NV. At this stage, you'll be hearing from us again so that you know what your contribution helped bring to life.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
