About this project
About this project
Giuseppi Logan was a contemporary of Albert Ayler, John Coltrane and Pharaoh Sanders. An accomplished sax player, as well as clarinet, flute and piano player, Giuseppi became known for his free form compositional genius. Having studied at the New England Conservatory, in the sixties Logan was hailed as one of the bright lights of free jazz. In the seventies, Giuseppi disappeared from view and remained lost to the music world for over 30 years. Around 2009 Giuseppi was found playing for change in Tompkins Square Park and assistance was found to get him housing. At the same time I was returning to my roots as a jazz musician and getting deeply into free-form jazz guitar. As I heard Giuseppi’s story and that he still loved to play, I recognized a rare opportunity to work with a gigantic talent. Through friends and contacts, we were able to connect and after one failed attempt that saw Giuseppi hospitalized for months we met up with Cooper Moore and Larry Roland in Manhattan for a full day of recording. The highlights of the session are captured in the Giuseppe Logan Project, with 3 new original compositions and Giuseppi’s unique twist on 3 classic jazz tunes.

Why do we need your money?
The project has been self-funded to date but to ensure that we can raise the budget for mastering and releasing high quality vinyl albums for your enjoyment (the best way to listen to jazz in my opinion), we would like to ask for your support in advance.
What are we going to do with your money?
Our minimum budget will produce 500 vinyl limited edition 180 gram vinyl albums plus digital downloads.
$750 Graphic Design & Artwork
$4000 Vinyl Pressing
$250 miscellaneous expenses
Additional funds above the minimum will support repair of Giuseppe’s saxophone ($750), optional CD pressing, getting the word out, and ongoing contributions to Giuseppi’s well being.
If pledges exceed 500 backers, the limited edition vinyl may be expanded to 750 copies.
UPDATE: We set a very low minimum goal to ensure a record got pressed. Thanks to our generous donors we are now funded! This will allow us to complete the project in all its facets including; we will press CDs for Giuseppi to sell, administration costs will be covered, we have sufficient funds to ensure your vinyl reward is very well packaged for transport, and we will assist with repair and upkeep of Giuseppi's instruments as well as any other urgent daily needs he may have. Folks who signed up for uploads may convert to CD (we'll send out a message when record is ready). The vinyl will remain a limited edition so if you know friends and fans that want vinyl, the easiest way to be sure to get in on the fun is to pre-order through a donation here. Futher goodwill donations can also support additional recording opportunities for Giuseppi.
What have we done so far?
We completed a full day’s recording with Guiseppi in New York’s Dubway studio on October 16, 2011. Cooper-Moore and Larry Roland both contributed more of their time than I could possibly compensate. In Nashville, I edited and sequenced the tracks and Bob Olhsson graciously assisted with mixing. The result is forty-seven minutes of tantalizing jazz improv all ready to be pressed to vinyl.
What are the risks?
If we succeed with raising the minimum for our campaign there is virtually none and you can look forward to receiving a fine piece of music. However, we cannot 100% guarantee the signed copies at the gold and platinum level until the pressing is completed.
What are the rewards?
You have the opportunity to pre-order a rare limited edition collector’s album and at the same time support a legendary jazz player in his love of making music.
The entire Mad King Edmund collective thanks you for your support!
