Stretch Goal: £7,000

Just 7 days til we hit our campaign deadline, and while we’re thrilled that 226 of you have pledged over £5,000 to help us reach our original goal, we can’t help but dream big. So here’s the low-down: we have a new stretch goal of £7,000! We’re plotting publications of two more chapbooks (Filipina / Egyptian / Korean TBC) from Asia to be launched in November – more truly brilliant writing we can’t wait to introduce you to!

Additionally, the money we raise will sponsor translations of all six Translating Feminisms chapbooks across other Asian languages where there might be a readership, but not the necessary framework or financial support for the translations to exist.

A percentage of sales from the chapbooks will also be donated to a local Yorkshire women’s charity.

And to say thank you for supporting us, here's a clip of Filipina feminist poet Marjorie Evasco making waves at the 2012 Poetry Parnassus Festival organised by our friends at the Southbank Centre.

Feminist sisters, unite! Pledge! And spread the word!

What is TRANSLATING FEMINISMS?

Translating Feminisms showcases intimate collaborations between some of Asia's most exciting female writers and emerging-star translators: contemporary poetry of bodies, labour and language, alongside essays exploring questions such as 'Does feminism translate?'

As part of Tilted Axis's wider project of decolonisation through & of translation, and in response to seeing WoC authors' work misread through a white feminist lens, we want to re-imagine the possibilities of a fully intersectional, international feminism, and ensure authors have the creative agency to contextualise their own work.

Small, beautiful and highly collectable, the chapbooks will be available individually and as a set.

The set of 3 will release this August (aka Women in Translation month). But first we need your help.

The line-up so far:

  • Vietnam: Nha Thuyen, translated by Kaitlin Rees
  • Nepal: Sulochana Manandhar Dhital, translated by Muna Gurung
  • South India: edited & translated by Meena Kandasamy, from the Tamil

About the chapbooks

From Vietnam comes a poetry collection and a poetic feminine body essay by writer and publisher Nha Thuyen, translated from the Vietnamese by Kaitlin Rees. Read Nha Thuyen's poem ‘which orientation with sea’ published by The Margins and 'the ship' in Asymptote

Next up we have a chapbook by the brilliant Nepali poet and labour activist Sulochana Manandhar, translated by Muna Gurung. Read Sulochana's poem ‘Night’ published by Words Without Borders and her interview with The Record

Plus we have Four Tamil Poets, a chapbook edited by Meena Kandasamy, featuring new translations by her alongside some by the late Lakshmi Holmstrom, of poetry by Malathi Maithri, Salma, Kutti Revathi and Sukirtharani.

Who is Tilted Axis Press?

Founded in 2015, Tilted Axis Press is a nonprofit dedicated to decolonisation through & of translation - publishing cult, contemporary Asian literature, mainly by women. Tilted Axis publishes the books that might not otherwise make it into English, for the very reasons that make them exciting – artistic originality, radical vision, the sense that here is something new. To date Tilted Axis has published six novels translated from the Bengali, Uzbek, Thai, and Korean and one Indonesian poem-art book.

Risks and challenges

Between us we share over 20 years' experience in the book industry. We're confident that we have the expertise to publish beautiful poetry & essay chapbooks.

We've lined up the poets, translators, printers and manuscripts. We have UK distribution and sales representation with Inpress, poetry specialists. We also have plans for promoting the chapbooks with launch events during Women in Translation month.

With your support for this poetry project, Tilted Axis can continue its mission to shake up contemporary international literature and the publishing industry. As a nonprofit, we're excited to experiment with more collective forms of publishing through crowdfunding, bringing under-represented languages into English. Back us, and we'll deliver.
